The EIT Digital Master School offers a two year education in which you can choose two universities in two different European countries, building a curriculum of technical courses combined with innovation and entrepreneurship studies.
Embedded systems are everywhere. More than 98% of the world’s processors are located in embedded systems. Applications include a wide variety of industrial and personal systems such as satellites, robots, cars, airplanes, elevators, mobile telephones, washing machines, and health-care equipment just to mention a few.
The Embedded Systems major focuses on enabling technologies and design methodologies for computing systems which are embedded as integral part of larger systems and designed for specific control functions of devices with various electronic and mechanical components. Graduates of the Embedded Systems programme will be world-class specialists and innovators in the field of embedded systems, capable of developing embedded solutions for new challenges in the cyber-physical systems and internet-of-things domains.
The Embedded Systems programme is offered at three entry point universities and seven exit point universities. The first year of studies will be similar at the three entry point universities (KTH, TU Berlin, or TU Eindhoven), covering the common base studies on construction of embedded systems, embedded hardware and software, and models and methods for embedded systems design.
The second year of studies will accommodate the technical specialisation provided by one of the exit point universities (Aalto University, University of Turku/Åbo Akademi, KTH, TU Berlin, TU Eindhoven, University of Trento, or BME Budapest). The specialisation option offered at Aalto University is Mobile Cyber-Physical Systems.

Mobile cyber-physical systems combine computational and physical elements. A mobile cyber-physical system is typically designed as a network of mobile interacting elements instead of as standalone devices. Considering the elements, the ability to communicate and sense their environment in an intelligent manner is essential.
The core of the specialisation Mobile Cyber-Physical Systems consists of project-based learning courses, in which the student will be trained in understanding the systems as a whole. This core is supplemented by a set of elective courses, which cover special technology needed in realizing such systems.
The specialisation promotes research-based innovation that utilizes multi-domain knowledge. The environment of Aalto University provides an excellent setting for this. Considering the larger EIT context, the specialisation is connected to the thematic area of Smart Spaces, where the use of wireless networking and virtual and mixed reality allows embedded systems to be used in new innovative contexts and ways.
Specialisation's mandatory courses include:
- Mobile Cloud Computing, 5 ECTS
- Project in Embedded Systems, 5-10 ECTS
Specialisation's elective courses can be selected from the following list:
- Speech Recognition, 5 ECTS
- User Interface Construction, 5 ECTS
- Web Services, 4 ECTS
- Deep Learning, 5 ECTS
- Computer Vision, 5 ECTS
