The Arctic is a place unlike anywhere else. Its fragile ecosystem, challenging weather and scarce infrastructure make it a demanding environment for the engineers who work there. By actually going to the Arctic – Svalbard or Greenland – and putting your skills to use, you will get valuable first-hand insight into working as an engineer in one of the most challenging areas of the world.

Cold climate engineering has an increasingly important role to play in ensuring the sustainable development of the Arctic. New shipping routes as well as mining possibilities are emerging in the region. The development of new industry in the Arctic region is intensifying rapidly and the industry now needs engineers with specialised Arctic competence.

Graduates of the Nordic Master in Cold Climate Engineering will have the skills needed to meet the demands of the industry and to work in the fragile Arctic environment.


Study programme

The main focus of the programme is to give you a profound understanding of how the skills, knowledge and specialisation you receive may be applied to jobs as researchers, consultants or practising engineers in the Arctic.

All graduates will have a deep understanding of the challenging Arctic environment and the ability to work within a diverse team of experts that represents different disciplines or cultures.

Teaching methods include lectures, assignments, fieldwork, laboratory work and project work. Theory is supported by experimental work and modelling, which are used extensively and in a manner appropriate for the study track.

The programme is jointly organised by Aalto University, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Your choice in specialisation dictates which universities you attend over the course of the programme.

Specialisation

The programme consists of three specialised study tracks:

  • Land Track: Focus on Arctic geoengineering (DTU and NTNU)    
  • Sea Track: Focus on Arctic ships and offshore structures  (NTNU and Aalto University)
  • Space Track: Focus on mapping and observing the Arctic (DTU and Aalto University)

Career prospects

Studying abroad gives your career a head start, as employers are always looking for graduates with an international outlook and intercultural competence. Upon graduation, you may be eligible to enter a doctoral programme at any of the participating universities, but you are also qualified for demanding positions in industry.

Cold climate engineering graduates are typically be employed by consulting, design, surveying and construction companies, the mining industry, oil companies, governmental bodies or research institutes and universities that have activities related to the Arctic. Possible duties include those of chief executive, development manager, team manager, consultant, specialist or researcher.


Admission

Admissions for the programme are processed by DTU. Applications must be submitted through the DTU admission system. For a detailed description of admission criteria, visit the programme's website.

You must indicate in your application which study track you wish to follow and submit a draft study plan. You must apply directly to the university in which you wish to study for the first year of the study track.

Motivation letter

All applicants must write a motivation letter as part of the application. For the Land and Sea tracks the motivation letter must include a passage describing your expectations regarding spending one or more semesters in Greenland or Svalbard.

Degree requirements

Students applying for the Nordic Master in Cold Climate Engineering must have completed a bachelor's degree (BSc) corresponding to a minimum 180 ECTS credits. Students in their final year of their bachelor’s degree studies are also eligible to apply, provided they have completed their BSc degree by the time the programme begins.

TOEFL:

  • Paper-based: 580 (written section grade 4,5)
  • Computer-based test: 237 (essay writing grade 4,5)
  • Internet-based test: 92 (written section grade 22)

IELTS:

  • 6.5, no section lower than 5.5 (only IELTS Academic Training accepted).

Cambridge Advanced English:

  • 180

Tuition fees and scholarships

Currently, Aalto University and DTU charge fees to non-EU/EEA students. Some universities also charge an application fee and some have a compulsory student union fee. Please read more at the individual universities' websites:
