Doctoral Program

The Doctor of Arts degree consists of a minimum of 80 ECTS and a doctoral dissertation. The recommended time of studies is 4-5 years.

To take the Doctor of Arts degree the doctoral student in art and design must demonstrate that she/he is well versed in her/his own field of research and its social significance, and has gained knowledge and skills needed for applying scientific research methods independently and critically, as well as to produce new scientific knowledge within the field of research. The aim of doctoral education is to familiarize the student with the development, basic problems and research methods of her/his own field of research, and to gain such knowledge of the general theory of science and of other disciplines relating to her/his own field of research that will enable her/him to follow developments in them.

Furthermore, the aim of the Doctor of Arts degree may also be for the student to gain knowledge and skills for independently conceiving methods of artistic creation or creating products, objects or works which fulfil high artistic demands.
