Studies at the Aalto University School of Art and Design

The School of Art, Design and Architecture is dedicated to design, audiovisual communication, art education and art. It is internationally renowned and as the largest art and design education provider in the Nordic countries and one of the most highly respected institutes in its field in the whole world.

Bachelor of Arts

The BA degree programmes provide the necessary skills for studies leading to the Master of Arts degree and research in design and applied art. The objective of education for this degree is to give the student the theoretical, intellectual, artistic and practical skills necessary for professional work in the field of art and design and the ability to independently carry out tasks requiring design expertise. This level of training also contains the basic aspects of research in the field of design. It will give the graduate the ability to follow development in the field and to pursue further studies leading to the Master of Arts degree. The Bachelor of Arts degree can be completed only in the Finnish or Swedish languages.

Master of Arts

The MA degree programmes provide the students with the skills for engaging independently in demanding tasks requiring expertise in the field of design and applied art, as well as for independent artistic work. The degree provides the necessary skills for studies leading to the Doctor of Arts degree. The Master of Arts degree can be completed in English or Finnish.

Doctoral Program

The Doctor of Arts degree consists of a minimum of 80 ECTS and a doctoral dissertation. The recommended time of studies is 4-5 years.

The aim of doctoral education is to familiarize the student with the development, basic problems and research methods of her/his own field of research, and to gain such knowledge of the general theory of science and of other disciplines relating to her/his own field of research that will enable her/him to follow developments in them.

Furthermore, the aim of the Doctor of Arts degree may also be for the student to gain knowledge and skills for independently conceiving methods of artistic creation or creating products, objects or works which fulfill high artistic demands.
