Good to know

Rental housing is mainly available on the private housing market. Available housing is advertised online (various rental apartment forums), in newspapers or through agents.

Often friends and colleagues, knowing local conditions are the best contacts to find accommodation, as finding housing can be time-consuming

A minimum rental period is usually 12 months for a private market apartment. This means that you are not allowed to terminate the rental agreement during the first year.

Finding accommodation for less than a year is often more difficult. The most difficult rental period length to find is 7 months-11 months, since Töölö Towers offers accommodation for a maximum of 6 months.

Rental apartments are almost always unfurnished, and in order to rent an apartment a deposit (equivalent to 1-3 months of rent) is usually required. The deposit is given back to you when you leave the apartment, providing that you have paid the rent and kept the apartment in good condition.

Average rental levels in private market

- 20m²-30m² studio apartment near campuses: minimum 600€/month

- room in a shared apartment approx. 400-550€/month

- 40m²-50m² two-room apartment near campuses: 750-1300€/month

Aalto Tori  (Aalto University intranet, Aalto Inside, has “Tori” forum- which shows you rental listings announced by the members of the University community. In order to access these intranet pages a general user ID for the Aalto University is required, issued by the Computing Centre. You are able to get this user permission only by personally visiting Aalto´s It centre and proving your university member status.)
