Aalto EcoMobility Initiative

EcoMobility is Aalto University’s initiative for ecological mobility. It aims at reducing people’s mobility needs through community planning and the planning of production and service processes. Simultaneously, it addresses these needs by proposing and implementing new low-emission mobility solutions.

The EcoMobility Initiative strives to solve the contradiction between people’s mobility needs and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. This is done through research, teaching, and the University’s own example. Our objective is to provide researchers and students with the know-how and tools to act as the front runners in society. The EcoMobility Initiative actively utilises the new university’s potential for strong multi-disciplinary education and research.

Energy efficiency and low-emission mobility

In the short term, the programme seeks to improve the energy efficiency of the existing technologies, which, in the case of vehicles, primarily focuses on improving their fuel efficiency (well-to-wheel).

EcoMobility is an active partner in putting low- and zero-emission vehicles into use in Finland. We set an example by putting low- and zero-emission mobility solutions into use in transportation between and within our campuses, thereby offering a test field for new business solutions.

A specific short-term objective is implementing ecological mobility solutions in transportation to and from the metro stations in the greater Otaniemi area, due to commence during 2015.

In the long term, we aim at new breakthrough innovations. Mobility needs may be reduced e.g. through telepresence.

Complex problems call for various solutions. Our objective is to enhance the knowledge of the whole university community and to increase the researchers’ and teachers’ visionary and cross-disciplinary knowledge. With this knowledge, we strive to impact on society and support the economy.

Future plans for Aalto EcoMobility

As started in autumn 2009, the EcoMobility Initiative was prepared by a steering committee and coordinator Antti Ruotoistenmäki during 2010. The spirit of Ecomobility will continue in cross-disciplinary ways by different departments and as a part of Aalto sustainable campus.
