National Doctoral Programmes

National Doctoral Programmes coordinated by Aalto University

National doctoral programmes are assigned the task to provide systematic, high-level and supervised researcher training for a fixed period. The training shall give the skills and competencies needed for research positions but also for other demanding positions of expertise. Doctoral programmes contribute to ensuring the supply of a sufficient number of high-level researchers and experts to meet the needs of universities, business and industry, and society at large. With a view to more international doctoral education, the aim is to increase the share of international doctoral students in the graduate schools to 20% on average by 2012.

Most of the graduate schools are networked projects jointly run by several universities, in which older and younger researchers work in research groups together with graduate students. This creates an innovative environment conducive to research quality and a learning environment which inspires graduate students. The graduate schools provide systematic education and guidance for the doctoral students. The goal is that the students write their doctoral dissertations in four years. Students in graduate schools are paid and work full-time on their research.

The Finnish researcher training system was established in 1995 and has been gradually expanded ever since. The national doctoral programmes are financed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the universities and the Academy of Finland. The Ministry of Education and Culture has granted up to 40 million euros annually to the doctoral programmes. The decisions on doctoral programme positions and operating grants for doctoral programmes are made by the Academy of Finland. The Academy also has the responsibility for the development and monitoring of doctoral programmes.

The national doctoral programmes coordinated by the Aalto University are listed above. In addition Aalto is a partner in 40 doctoral programmes coordinated by other Finnish universities. The doctoral programmes select their students independently. If you are interested in taking your doctoral degree in a national doctoral programme at Aalto, please contact the programme in question directly.
