Only Doctoral Degrees Conferred at the Ceremony

Exactly one hundred years ago, on 2 April 1908, the Polytechnic Institute was granted university status by imperial decree, allowing the school, renamed Technical University of Finland, to grant the degree Doctor of Science. Since the very beginning, only doctoral degrees have been conferred at the solemn ceremony. In the early years, obtaining a Doctor of Science was uncommon: at the ceremonial conferment held in 1949, a Doctor of Science was only conferred upon 57 people. In the past hundred years, more than 2 400 Doctors of Science or Philosophy have graduated from TKK.

One-Day Ceremony

The conferment of doctoral degrees at TKK is a one-day ceremony. The day begins with a procession and musical performances and climaxes with the conferment of degrees, during which the conferrer places the doctor’s hats upon the young doctors’ heads. In the evening celebration, the banquet, evening gowns and white ties, ballroom dancing as well as the inspiring speeches and music create a festive and academic, but convivial atmosphere.
