TKK Materials Processing and Powder Metallurgy develops superior implants

Hundreds of thousands of implant operations are done around the world every year. One of the largest implants is a replacement hip prosthesis, which is a relatively common implant even in Finland. The TKK Laboratory of Materials Processing and Powder Metallurgy has developed a new type of ceramic composite, which provides a significant increase in the toughness and wear-resistance of prosthetic components.

New ceramic prostheses are superior to the older metal-polymer type prostheses, particularly due to their low friction, high wear-resistance and excellent biocompatibility.  Pure ceramics, however, is fragile, so increasing the toughness and wear-resistance of ceramic prosthetic components is extremely desirable.
 
Working within a number of EU research projects, the TKK Materials Processing and Powder Metallurgy research group has developed a new type of functionally graded ceramic composite, which provides a significant increase in the strength of prosthetic components (+75%) and a five-fold increase in wear-resistance. The material combination offers optimal tension distribution, which has a positive impact on such properties as impact resistance. Use of this material allows prosthetics to be custom-tailored to achieve a whole new degree of safety.
