25.10.2010 In its meeting on 22nd October 2010, the board of Aalto University decided to approve an amendment to its bylaws and divide the Aalto University School of Science and Technology into four new schools of technology starting from 1st of January 2011.

The Board Appointed Three New Deans

25.10.2010 At its meeting on the 22nd October 2010, the Foundation Board of Aalto University appointed three new Deans. Professor Tuija Pulkkinen was appointed as Dean of the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering and Professor Ilkka Niemelä was appointed as Dean of the Aalto University School of Science for five years from 1.1.2011. Professor Jyrki Wallenius was appointed Dean of the Aalto University School of Economics for the year 2011.

01.10.2010 Press release, 1 October 2010 The first ceremonial conferment of doctoral degrees from Aalto University took place in Otaniemi today, on 1 October. These were the first doctors to graduate from Aalto University, although it was the twenty-first conferment from the School of Science and Technology. In the ceremony, 365 Doctors of Technology and Philosophy received their degrees, of whom 27% were women and 14% were international students. In addition, nine honorary doctorates were awarded.

New Students’ Semester Kicks Off with Shared Events

08.09.2010 Aalto University’s new students kicked off their first academic year with the events of an orientation week organised in late August/early September. The climax of the week was the Aalto First Experience event, celebrated on the university’s three campuses on Friday 3 September.

09.07.2010 The Aalto University School of Science and Technology has selected 1,174 new students through the 2010 Finnish joint application process for engineering and architecture studies. A further 40 new students came through the Information Networks degree programme selection process, and 23 through other separate application processes. In total, the School of Science and Technology received 3,675 applications for the first stage of selection. This represented an increase of 5.2 % since last year.

09.06.2010 The Aalto University School of Science and Technology will reorganize into four schools of technology as of the beginning of 2011. The University Board made a favorable decision-in-principle on the matter at its meeting held on 4 June.

A Sino-Finnish Cooperation Platform Is Opened in Shanghai

Aalto University, Shanghai Finnish Aalto University and Chinese Tongji University have established a new cooperation platform in Shanghai called Aalto-Tongji Design Factory. It’s focusing on innovative design, research and cooperation. The space has been designed and built during this spring and it will be opened May 25th in Zhangwu Campus of Tongji University.

Aalto University School of Science and Technology admits 541 students to pursue master’s degrees - applicants from 89 different countries

30.04.2010 The Aalto University School of Science and Technology admitted a total of 541 new students during the 2010 application cycle for its two-year master’s programs. Of them, 321 have a bachelor's degree from a foreign university, while 220 have one from a Finnish higher education institution. A total of 2538 applications were received by the closing date at the end of February, and of them, 1539 eligible applications were submitted for academic evaluation.

27.04.2010 Academy Professor Maarit Karppinen has advanced quickly in her career to the top of international materials research. The latest highlight of her career is admission to the Finnish Academy of Sciences which was granted on April 12. Prof. Karppinen, who is the head of the Chemistry department at Aalto University School of Science and Technology, urges young scientists to boldly venture abroad. She views the future of Aalto University with optimism.

21.04.2010 The Aalto University School of Science and Technology has awarded the ‘Doctoral Dissertation of the Year’ prize of 2009 to D.Sc. (Tech.) Olli Pottonen for his dissertation ‘Perfect Binary Codes: Classification and Properties’. The prize is worth 5000 euros.

Aalto University Executive Education Oy provides leadership training

07.04.2010 HSE Executive Education and TKK Executive School of Business, the organizations offering Aalto University’s leadership development programs, merged on April 1st 2010. The name of the new organization is Aalto University Executive Education (Aalto EE). Aalto EE will continue to offer high quality education for business executives – now on an even broader scale, taking advantage of the know-how of the new Aalto University.
