06.10.2010 Uruguayan Official and Business Delegation headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Luis Almagro visits the University of Helsinki on 7.10.2010. During the visit the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and  Aalto University School of Science and Technology showcase their co-operation with Uruguay in the area of forestry and wood-related teaching and research.

European Truffle Scientists at Juva

18.08.2010 Following the first European Truffle Scientists Group conference (TAUESG) in Vienna last year, the second congress will be hosted by the Juva Truffle Centre and the Bioprocess Engineering Group of Aalto University in Finland from 20 to 22 August 2010. The congress participants will consist of about 50 distinguished truffle researchers from altogether 19 countries. The congress will give these researchers an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and to focus on the main problems in truffle identification and cultivation. Both the Juva Truffle Centre and Aalto University are looking forward to this conference, which they hope to provide an opportunity for researchers from all the participating countries to showcase the latest truffle research and to engage in fruitful discussions.

The Glueck Best Paper Award to two Aalto University School of Science and Technology researchers

13.08.2010 Researcher Jens Schmidt and Professor Thomas Keil of Aalto University School of Science and Technology have won the Glueck Best Paper Award of the Business Policy and Strategy division at the 2010 Academy of Management Meeting in Montreal. The winning paper is titled "Unique Demand Complementarities – A Demand-based Theory of Diversification".

Astronaut Timothy Kopra visited Aalto University School of Science and Technology

21.07.2010 A NASA astronaut of Finnish descent, Timothy Kopra, visited Aalto University School of Science and Technology on Wednesday July 21st. Kopra made an official visit to Finland and attended a meeting with experts and students at the Otaniemi campus.

A study reviews the reasons for the failure of the American merger of Stora Enso

14.07.2010 A recent publication by Aalto University School of Science and Technology reviews the assumptions made by the management of Stora Enso – the largest paper producer in Europe – that led to the acquisition of the North American Consolidated Papers in the year 2000. With the merger Stora Enso attempted to grow into a truly global company in the forest industry.

Seeking urban happiness

The Urban Happiness project of the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK) at Aalto University School of Science and Technology is studying how an urban community can be both ecologically and socially sustainable.

Professor Grätzel wins the 2010 Millennium Technology Grand Prize for dye-sensitized solar cells

09.06.2010 The Winner of the 2010 Millennium Technology Prize is Professor Michael Grätzel from Switzerland for his third generation, low cost, dye-sensitized solar cells. President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen handed the EUR 800,000 Grand Prize and the prize trophy “Peak” to Professor Grätzel today at the Grand Award Ceremony at the Finnish National Opera, Helsinki.

Jukka Seppälä appointed Academy Professor

08.06.2010 The Board of the Academy of Finland has appointed nine new Academy Professors. Professor in Polymer Technology, Jukka Seppälä, was appointed Academy Professor at Aalto University. The new Academy Professors’ term of office runs from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2015.

Aalto University to organize a symposium on sustainable development in June

25.05.2010 4S - Summer Symposium on Sustainable Systems A multidisciplinary research group of Aalto University, Helsinki University and Oulu University will organize an international crossdisciplinary symposium for doctoral students from 14 to 17 June in Sannainen. A total of 73 applications were received, and 46 participants admitted, among them participants from Yale and Cambridge.

A Sino-Finnish Cooperation Platform Is Opened in Shanghai

25.05.2010 Press release25.5. Aalto University, Shanghai Finnish Aalto University and Chinese Tongji University have established a new cooperation platform in Shanghai called Aalto-Tongji Design Factory. It’s focusing on innovative design, research and cooperation. The space has been designed and built during this spring and it will be opened May 25th in Zhangwu Campus of Tongji University.

European truffle conference to be held in Finland in August

20.05.2010 The Aalto University School of Science and Technology and the Juva Truffle Center will organize the second European truffle conference of TAUESG in Juva on 20–22 August. The bioprocess engineering unit of the Aalto University Department of Biotechnology and Chemical Technology has launched the research and experimental cultivation of truffles in Finland. Aalto University is partner in the Juva Truffle Center.

Professori emeritus Ismo Lindell sai valtion tiedonjulkistamispalkinnon

29.04.2010 Professor Emeritus Ismo Lindell received the State Award for Public Information in a ceremony held at the Government Banquet Hall in Helsinki on April 28, 2010. The award was presented by Minister of Education Henna Virkkunen. Lindell received the award for his book ‘Sähkön pitkä historia’ (‘Long history of electricity’).

The “Doctoral dissertation of the year” prize awarded to researcher of information theor

21.04.2010 The Aalto University School of Science and Technology has awarded the ‘Doctoral Dissertation of the Year’ prize of 2009 to D.Sc. (Tech.) Olli Pottonen for his dissertation ‘Perfect Binary Codes: Classification and Properties’. The prize is worth 5000 euros.

Aalto University Executive Education Oy provides leadership training

07.04.2010 HSE Executive Education and TKK Executive School of Business, the organizations offering Aalto University’s leadership development programs, merged on April 1st 2010. The name of the new organization is Aalto University Executive Education (Aalto EE). Aalto EE will continue to offer high quality education for business executives – now on an even broader scale, taking advantage of the know-how of the new Aalto University.
