Aalto University continued successfully with a conservative investment strategy

The return of the Aalto University investment portfolio was 4.0% in the first half of 2012 and the market value of the portfolio at the end of June 2012 was 862 million euro.

Aalto University investment strategy emphasizes securing the capital of the endowment during the first years of operations. The portfolio is broadly diversified between different asset classes and geographical areas.

At the end of June 2012, 21% of the endowment was invested in equities and 79% in fixed income and money markets. Return from equity investments was +5.7% and from fixed income and money market investments +3.7%.

As the uncertainty in the financial markets is expected to continue, the university investment strategy will remain conservative.

The purpose of the Aalto University Endowment is to generate additional funding for world class research and education. The endowment provides the university with greater financial independence and enhances its ability to direct resources to strategic focus areas. The returns from the endowment are expected to cover 6 to 8 percent of the university 400 million euro annual operative budget.
