Aalto University admits 1720 new students – 16 % of applicants gain admission

A total of 1720 students were admitted to Aalto University in its spring application round.

372 of the newly-admitted students, will start at the School of Engineering, 391 at the School of Economics, 188 at the School of Chemical Technology, 276 at the School of Science, 319 at the School of Electrical Engineering and 174 at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

The number of applicants to Aalto University in the spring application round was 10472. Of these, 16,4 % gained admission.

In addition, in the application period for master's programmes, 1037 applicants secured a place to study. There were a total of 4032 applicants for the Aalto University master's programmes.

The four schools of technology maintained their popularity

A total of 1210 new students were admitted to the Schools of Engineering, Chemical Technology, Science, and Electrical Engineering and to the Architecture and Landscape Architecture studies to the  School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The students were selected through the joint application process for university education in engineering and architecture (DIA), the Information Networks degree programme application process and separate application processes. Altogether, this year the number of first-choice applicants in the first-stage selections for technological and scientific education was 4253 in all selection categories. Compared to the year 2011, the number of applicants increased by two per cents. The share of women was over 27 %.

In the earlier master's-stage application process that ended in spring, 1699 applications from 75 different countries were submitted to the Aalto University Schools of Technology. A total of 1434 eligible applicants made their way to the academic evaluation stage. Of these, 573 were admitted to the School of Engineering, School of Chemical technology, School of Sciences, School of Electrical Engineering and School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

Mechanical engineering and energy and HVAC-technology the most popular programmes of the School of Engineering

In the joint application for education for university education in engineering and architecture (DIA) and in the separate application processes, a total of 1814 first-choice applicants applied to the School of Engineering. The total number of admitted students in the first-stage admission process was 372 new students. In the joint application period, the school's most popular programmes were Mechanical Engineering (757 applicants) and Energy and HVAC-technology (448 applicants). The cut scores went highest for the energy and HVAC-technology, as well as for the real estate economics degree programmes.

The School of Chemical Technology attracts female students

The School of Chemical Technology received a total of 908 first-choice applicants through the DIA application process. Of those, 188 gained admission. The most popular of the school's three programmes was the degree programme in Chemical Technology (527 applicants), the cut score of which also rose to be the highest. The School of Chemical Technology was the most popular school of technology among female applicants, who made up 49 % of those admitted.

Computer Science and Engineering and Industrial Engineering and Management subjects of interest at the School of Science

The School of Science received a total of 1657 first-choice applicants through the DIA application process and the separate application process, 276 were admitted. The most popular programmes were computer science and engineering (647 applicants) and industrial engineering and management (568 applicants). The cut scores rose highest in the degree programme industrial engineering and management.

Electronics, Electrical Engineering, and Bioinformation Technology exerts a pull to the School of Electrical Engineering

The School of Electrical Engineering received a total of 1600 first-choice applications through the DIA application process and the separate application process. Of them, 319 new students secured a place to study. The most popular programmes were Electronics and Electrical Engineering (711 applicants), and Bioinformation Technology (537 candidates). The cut score rose highest for the degree programme of Bioinformation Technology.

School of Arts, Design and Architecture admits first students of architecture and landscape architecture

The Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture received a total of 666 first-choice applicants through the DIA application process for Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Of those, 55 were admitted.
