The exact time for repair work on other lecture halls will be specified at a later time.

Operations to be carried out during renovation

The site’s landscaping work will require that rock mass be blasted, and transportation of masses of earth to and fro will lead to extensive lorry traffic on Otakaari and at the Alvarin aukio and Rakentajan aukio squares.

Due to repair work on the front facade, the windows and the outer roof, scaffolding will be constructed along the building’s facade and a partial weather shelter will be set up on the roof.

The inside sewage and drainage pipes will also be renewed. Personal safety and fire precautions will be improved during window repairs. Accessibility to the building will be improved with such features as new elevators as well as lifts for the disabled. Some changes will be made to the interior layout. During renovation the aim is to preserve the external appearance of the building.

Otakaari 1 was the main building for the old Helsinki University of Technology. It was designed by Alvar Aalto and completed in 1963.
