Students learned about the production of a 3D movie

Early this year, somewhere deep in the confines of the Media Centre Lume of Aalto University School of Art and Design, it was possible to have an encounter of a different kind, as students were working on a film exercise in the spirit of science fiction.
On a joint course combining Cinematography, Production Design and Costume Design, students learned about the genre of science fiction movies and 3D production.
The course produced a film exercise that features chameleons, Bedouins and alien characters. The main character is a woman who tries to escape from a polluted city into the safety of a space ship. However, to leave the city, she needs a passport, something that is not issued to just anyone.
The 3D element in the film was created by using two cameras mounted onto a device known as the mirror rig, which constituted a new technical challenge. Establishing the impression of depth on film and in space was explored by varying the distances between the camera lenses.
Geometry correction for the material is currently being performed in England, after which the material will come back to the Aalto University School of Art and Design for editing. The movie Keskuspoliksen unet (Dreams from Centralpolis) will be finished in the autumn, but is not intended for distribution outside of the school and will be assessed by its creators only.
