Satu Maaranen wins Designers' Nest Award

Satu Maaranen, who studies Fashion Design at the Aalto University School of Art and Design, won the Nordic Designers’ Nest Award with her women’s wear collection. According to the international panel, Maaranen’s strengths included the strong concept behind the collection and her Scandinavian touch.
Maaranen also designed all the patterns and materials for her collection, and had them made at European textile factories.
The award was given as a part of the Copenhagen Fashion Fairs. HRH Crown Princess Mary presented the award, whose cash value is DKK 50,000.
Designers’ Nest is one of the major Nordic competitions for fashion students. Organised biannually by invitation, the competition was first held in February 2005.
Students of Fashion and Clothing Design from the School of Art and Design have also previously enjoyed success in Designers’ Nest. Riina Hirvonen won the award in 2006, when Nora Sederlöf received an honourable mention. Kalle Riihivainio received an honourable mention in 2007. Joonas Saari won the award in 2008, and in winter 2009 the winner was Sofia Järnefelt, while the honourable mention went to Anne Törnroos. The winner in autumn 2009 was Elina Määttänen.
“We stand out from the other competitors particularly in that while our students’ collections have great artistic value, they are also highly wearable. I feel that our students are very good at managing the collection as a whole and producing a very polished final look,” says Lecturer Ilona Hyötyläinen of the School of Art and Design, regarding the success of the School’s students in the competition.
