New trends from fashion design students

27.05.2010

The new range of creations from students in the Fashion and Clothing Design programme at Aalto University School of Art and Design were unveiled on Wednesday 26 May with three fashion shows that attracted a full house of fashion, art and trend enthusiasts to Media Centre Lume.

The Näytös 10 spring show presented final year academic thesis work by BA and MA programme students, together with creations designed and realised on courses in fashion and clothing design, and international competition entries. The show was produced by third year BA programme students. A total of 20 fashion ranges were presented and four prizes were awarded to promising young designers at a special session for invited guests.

Diesel, the principal partner in the event, awarded a prize of 1,500 euros to Essi Lehto. Announcing the prize, Diesel Marketing Manager Marika Orkamo explained:

“We were keen to reward a talented young designer with plenty of potential. We found that her designs embody the spirit of Diesel.”

Elle magazine, Marimekko and Aalto University awarded a joint prize of 1,000 euros to Elina Määttänen. The prize was presented by Elle fashion editor Mia Dillemuth:

“There was a great deal in this show that I would be keen to cover as a fashion journalist, and that I would also be willing to buy as a consumer. Out of all this, we chose Elina Määttänen for her inspiring, harmonious and fresh approach.”

The winner of the Tigi Design Talent prize was announced by SKT Group Trend Co-ordinator Mikko Vainio. The prize went to Elina Peltonen and Alisa Närvänen for their innovative and inspiring range, which also attracted commercial interest.

The Coca Cola light Fashion prize, a genuine pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes, was won by Anna Alanko. A greeting from Anne Kukkohovi was read out by Maija Mäkirinne: “Our chosen range is an exciting and contemporary, stylistically harmonious work that stresses femininity, grace and a balanced use of colours.”
