Nokia's global campaign development head to lead brand building of Aalto University

08.04.2010

Tapio Hedman moves to steer communications and marketing of a new, unique higher education institution in Finland

Tapio Hedman, MPS, (47), from Nokia Oyj, has been appointed the Communications Director of Aalto University from 1st of May 2010. Hedman's tasks will include both national and international communications for Aalto University, as well as marketing and brand building.

Aalto University is the result of a recent merger of Finland’s three top universities: The Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and The University of Art and Design Helsinki. The three constituent schools of the Aalto University are all leading and renowned institutions in their respective fields and in their own right, and jointly bring centuries of experience to the new Aalto University. Aalto’s ambition is to evolve into one of the world's leading universities.

For the last 12 years, Tapio Hedman has held numerous global leadership positions in corporate communications, brand management and marketing in Nokia. Since the beginning of 2008 he has been in charge of the creative development for the company's global marketing campaigns and of reforming Nokia's marketing strategy. In 2006 and 2007, Hedman was globally responsible for the marketing of the former Nokia Multimedia business group. Before that he was in charge of Nokia's global brand strategy for three years, and between 1997 and 2002 he was leading PR and communications for the former Nokia Mobile Phones business group worldwide. Before his career in Nokia, Hedman was responsible for corporate communications of Hartwall, a leading Finnish brewing and beverages company.

- Among the most important tasks for the communication director is to draw more international attention to Aalto University's current and future achievements and potential in research and education. Our mission is to make Aalto University a world class university within ten years time, based on its unique strengths and characteristics, summarizes the President of Aalto University, Tuula Teeri.

- The on-going change and the ambitious agenda of the new university pose both challenges and opportunities for communications and marketing. Leverage of daily information of the university’s development process is a must both internally for the 25.000 Aalto employees and students, as well as for the broad external stakeholder groups both in Finland and internationally.

- I am extremely pleased to have an internationally experienced, multi-skilled expert to lead our communications and brand building. Given his background, I am convinced that Hedman will be able to greatly contribute to the culture of excellence, agility and renewal which Aalto University aspires to build, Teeri concludes.

Aalto University's management team is now complete. Already earlier, Professors Heikki Mannila, Martti Raevaara, Hannu Seristö and Jorma Kyyrä were appointed Vice Presidents, Dr. (Techn.) Hanna-Leena Livio the Human Resources Director, MSc (Econ) Marianna Bom the Finance Director, MSc (Eng.) Jari Jokinen the Director of Policy and Foresight, and MSc (Econ) Jyri Tawast the Fundraising Director. Professors Helena Hyvönen, Eero Kasanen and Matti Pursula continue to lead the University’s three Schools as their Executive Deans.
