Aalto University celebrates its opening on January 8

07.01.2010

Aalto University is celebrating its opening on Friday 8 January 2010. The celebrations will be visible in Helsinki’s city centre in the afternoon when a procession of the University’s guests relocates from Finlandia House to the Museum of Modern Art Kiasma. Due to the procession, special arrangements will be implemented concerning the traffic along Mannerheimintie.

The procession will close off the entire north-bound lane of Mannerheimintie between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Additionally, only one of the two lanes leading to Mannerheimintie along Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu will be in use during the event. Motorists are asked to avoid driving along Mannerheimintie and to use alternative routes.

Around 2,500 guests will take part in Aalto University's opening day. The guests include international invitees, state leaders and members of parliament as well as students, professors and personnel from Aalto University. The opening day program will be televised live on the LED screen outside Kiasma, starting at 2 p.m.

"We don't want to celebrate behind closed doors, which is why we aim for the opening day festivities to be visible on the city's streets as well. There will be fire artists along the procession route, for example," explains Aalto University's Tuuli Sotamaa, in charge of the opening day celebrations.
