Economical and environmentally-friendly pulp bleaching
25.02.2011 A simulation model for pulp bleaching was created in the Virtual Pulp Bleaching (VIP) project led by Professor Tapani Vuorinen from the Aalto University School of Chemical Technology. The model will yield information of phenomena taking place during pulp bleaching, especially about reactions between lignin and bleaching chemicals that cause the pulp's brown colour. The chemicals used in pulp bleaching are costly. In addition, water and energy are used in the bleaching process. With the help of the knowledge produced by the VIP model, pulp can be bleached more economically and in a more environmentally friendly way.

Policy variants for coordinating supply chain inventory replenishments
20.04.2011 M.Sc. MBA Kaij E. Karrus doctoral dissertation, a set of policies has been developed for coordinating production and distribution systems. These policies are shown to produce higher lower bounds of maximum effectiveness than known policies of similar type. Thus, the additional cost from using these policies will be lower than in known policies. The developed policies can also be applied with similar outcomes to several different inventory replenishment and inventory holding cost structures within distribution systems.

Researchers cut machinery fuel consumption by half

This new technology captures energy, which up to now has been lost by the machinery when working, and uses it instead of fuel. Aalto University researchers explain the microwave losses in superconducting devices
14.06.2011 Researchers in Aalto University Low Temperature Laboratory together with groups in Paris and Moscow have studied the properties of superconducting devices at microwave frequencies. The Low Temperature Laboratory researchers managed to explain the experimental finding concerning microwave losses in Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). National MEMS Technology Roadmap published

Aalto University’s foundation capital has been amassed

Soil moisture can now be measured from an aircraft

New nanoscale parameter by Aalto University resolves dilemmas on silicon property
18.08.2011 The new discovery by Aalto University can have major impact on future nanoscale device design, such as ultraviolet photo detectors and drug delivery. In bulk size, many materials like silicon are as brittle as glass. In nanoparticle size, the same material can be compressed into half their size without breaking them. The new discovery was made by an international research group led by Professor Roman Nowak from Aalto University.

Renovation of Otakaari 1 begun 1 October

The M wing will be completed in October 2012 and the Y wing in March 2013. The D and E lecture halls will be repaired during the summer of 2012. The exact time for repair work on other lecture halls will be specified at a later time.
EU grant for a basic component of the quantum computer

The TEE was launched in spring 2010 and completed in autumn 2011.

16.12.2011 At its meeting on 16 December 2011, the board of Aalto University appointed Professor Helena Hyvönen (born 1950) as Dean of the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture from 1.1.2012 until 31.7.2013. At present, Hyvönen is Dean of the Aalto University School of Art and Design.
