07.01.2010 Aalto University is announcing several postdoctoral research posts in the University's different research fields. The vacancies announced are in the units that performed especially well in an international research assessment. Aalto University rewards these units with a total of fourteen postdoctoral research posts. In addition, other postdoctoral tasks of different lengths are announced vacant in the rewarded units.
07.01.2010 Aalto University is celebrating its opening on Friday 8 January 2010. The celebrations will be visible in Helsinki’s city centre in the afternoon when a procession of the University’s guests relocates from Finlandia House to the Museum of Modern Art Kiasma. Due to the procession, special arrangements will be implemented concerning the traffic along Mannerheimintie.
08.01.2010 The official inauguration of Aalto University took place in Finlandia Hall and Kiasma on 8th January 2010: traditions were honoured while, at the same time, something new and unique was being created.
15.01.2010 Professor Kalevi Ekman from the Aalto University School of Science and Technology has been awarded the title of ‘The Otaniemi Person of the Year 2009’.
15.01.2010 Otaniemi is now home to the national Nanomicroscopy Center, one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
22.01.2010 For the inauguration, the President of Aalto University had a new gown and a chain of office to wear.

09.02.2010 International Design Business Management (IDBM) and Creative Sustainability (CS) are joint Master's degree programs of Aalto University School of Art and Design, School of Economics and School of Science and Technology.
11.02.2010 The EU Committee of the Regions has labelled Helsinki-Uusimaa as the European Entrepreneurial Region (EER) 2012. The decision was made public Feb 11, 2010 at the Committee meeting in Brussels. Granted for the first time, the award attracted 36 regional nominees. The title was apportioned to three regions for the year 2011 and three for 2012. The EER award serves as recognition to those areas with the most credible plan of action promoting entrepreneurship with realistic foresight and outstanding political vision.

18.02.2010 An international research group has discovered the birthplace of gamma-ray emission from quasar 3C279.
03.03.2010 Professor Virpi Tuunainen was appointed the new director of the Aalto University Service Factory on 1st January 2010. Tuunainen is Professor of Information Systems Science at the Aalto University School of Economics.
05.03.2010 The results of the research conducted at the Low Temperature Laboratory of the Aalto University School of Science and Technology and Scuola Normal Superiore were published in the Nature Physics online edition on 28th February.
15.03.2010 Researchers of aivoAALTO introduced the multidisciplinary brain research of Aalto University to the general public on open lectures held 11 March in Otaniemi. The event was opened by the director of aivoAALTO, Academy Professor Riitta Hari, who introduced some methods used in brain imaging. The lecture series also discussed brain plasticity and the use of economics games and cinema in human brain research.

New, high-strength and lightweight nacre-mimetic material applicable to large-scale industrial processes
22.03.2010 The Molecular materials research group within the Department of Applied Physics in collaboration with VTT and Royal Institute of Technology show the first example of light-weight but mechanically strong nanocomposite material mimicking the nacreous shells that allow upscaling for industrial processes.

31.03.2010 Aalto on Tracks takes one hundred (100) students, teachers and guests of Aalto University from Helsinki to the Shanghai World Expo in May 2010. The group departs from Helsinki with a private train on May 14th and will reach Shanghai by the opening of the Aalto-Tongji Design Factory.
07.04.2010 HSE Executive Education and TKK Executive School of Business, the organizations offering Aalto University’s leadership development programs, merged on April 1st 2010. The name of the new organization is Aalto University Executive Education (Aalto EE). Aalto EE will continue to offer high quality education for business executives – now on an even broader scale, taking advantage of the know-how of the new Aalto University.
08.04.2010 Tapio Hedman moves to steer communications and marketing of a new, unique higher education institution in Finland
14.04.2010 Researchers from Aalto University, European Molecular Biology Laboratory Heidelberg and the University of Manchester have developed a new computational method to identify targets of regulator genes. The method is presented in the Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
Eight new Academy Research Fellows appointed from the Aalto University School of Science and Technology
14.04.2010 The Research Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering of the Academy appointed 19 new Academy Research Fellows on 12 April 2010. 8 researchers from the School of Science and Technology were appointed as new Academy Research Fellows.
23.04.2010 Academy Professor Maarit Karppinen has advanced quickly in her career to the top of international materials research. The latest highlight of her career is admission to the Finnish Academy of Sciences which was granted on April 12. Prof. Karppinen, who is the head of the Chemistry department at Aalto University School of Science and Technology, urges young scientists to boldly venture abroad. She views the future of Aalto University with optimism.
26.04.2010 A gala event for the Product Development Project, in which the results of 13 multidisciplinary student projects were made public, was held in Design Factory on 23.4. The prototypes created in the projects were developed in collaboration with businesses and international partners.
28.04.2010 In spring 2009 Aalto University launched a call for new ideas for further development of teaching and learning in the new university. Altogether 180 proposals were submitted, of which 12 were selected to best meet the criteria set for the new "Aalto Courses": innovative course content, effective teaching practices, multidisciplinary co-operation, societal impact, and multi-cultural interaction.
29.04.2010 This year a record number of applicants sought admission to Aalto University's three schools, totalling over 15,400. 10,738 applicants applied in the joint application period for Aalto University Schools, whilst 4,668 applied directly for Master's level studies.
11.05.2010 Wärtsilä has decided to donate a total of EUR 1.5 million to support science, research and education at Finnish universities. The support is divided as follows: EUR 1 million to the Aalto University Endowment Fund, EUR 300,000 to Hanken School of Economics, and EUR 200,000 to Åbo Akademi University Endowment Fund.
11.05.2010 Aalto on Tracks is taking over 80 people from the Aalto University community to the Shanghai World Expo - on a private train. The train leaves Helsinki on Friday 14 May at 18.23 and arrives in Shanghai 10 days later. 14.05.2010 The Aalto in Shanghai project brings the Finnish Aalto University to Shanghai World Expo. The project consists of 15 different projects realized by the three schools of Aalto University: The School of Art and Design, School of Technology and School of Economics. The theme of Shanghai World Expo, “Better City – Better Life” has been a starting point for all the projects.
17.05.2010 Together with Kesko and SOK (Suomen Osuuskauppa), the Federation of Finnish Commerce is donating €1.2 million to Aalto University. The aim of this significant donation is to support research into commerce and services.
25.05.2010 Finnish Aalto University and Chinese Tongji University have established a new cooperation platform in Shanghai called Aalto-Tongji Design Factory. It’s focusing on innovative design, research and cooperation. The space has been designed and built during this spring and it will be opened May 25th in Zhangwu Campus of Tongji University.
26.05.2010 A multidisciplinary research group of Aalto University, Helsinki University and Oulu University will organize an international crossdisciplinary symposium for doctoral students from 14 to 17 June in Sannainen. A total of 73 applications were received, and 46 participants admitted, among them participants from Yale and Cambridge.
26.05.2010 The Aalto University School of Art and Design and Blue1 Airlines have entered into a partnership for the design of the outward appearance of the company’s airplanes. Blue1 will acquire a new model of plane for its fleet and will at the same time modernise the look of the aircraft one at a time, starting in autumn 2010.
27.05.2010 An international team has prepared a library of synthetic biomaterials, so-called Janus-molecules, that mimic cell membranes. Self-assembled nanostructures which they call "dendrimersomes" may be broadly useful for delivering cancer drugs safely to the body. The study appeared in Science on 21st May.
27.05.2010 The new range of creations from students in the Fashion and Clothing Design programme at Aalto University School of Art and Design were unveiled on Wednesday 26 May with three fashion shows that attracted a full house of fashion, art and trend enthusiasts to Media Centre Lume.
02.06.2010 Tieto and Aalto University are increasing co-operation in the research and innovation of digital financial management and mobile commerce. These areas are among the leading projects of Aalto Service Factory during 2010–2011. The aim of the collaboration projects is to generate high standard research and to meet the demands of trade and industry.
08.06.2010 The Aalto University School of Art and Design will continue as the coordinator of the Cumulus network. Cumulus is a non-profit organization of 169 institutions of art, design and media from 43 countries. It is the only one in the world to serve art and design education and research.

10.06.2010 The Winner of the 2010 Millennium Technology Prize is Professor Michael Grätzel from Switzerland for his third generation, low cost, dye-sensitized solar cells. President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen handed the EUR 800,000 Grand Prize and the prize trophy “Peak” to Professor Grätzel today at the Grand Award Ceremony at the Finnish National Opera, Helsinki.
10.06.2010 Aalto University and Microsoft have launched research cooperation. The decision was sealed on Wednesday on the 9th of June in a meeting in Otaniemi, Espoo with researchers from Aalto University and Microsoft.

18.06.2010 European Union, Baltic Sea Region Programme has approved Rail Baltica Growth Corridor of 3,6 MEUR budget for years 2011-2013. City of Helsinki is the Lead Partner and CEMAT at Aalto University School of Economics is the Coordinator of the Project. Launched in January 2011, the Project aims to improve the competitiveness and accessibility of cities and regions in the Eastern Baltic Sea Region.
18.06.2010 The President of Aalto University and the Rector of Helsinki University have appointed Professor Samuel Kaski as the new Director of Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT for a fixed five-year term.
21.06.2010 Having received the maximum number of points, Aalto University Finland was one of the three winners of the Architecture Prize in the Solar Decathlon Europe on 20 June 2010, with the two other winners being Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña and Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University.
30.06.2010 Aalto Venture Garage is the hub where entrepreneurs throughout the Baltic area get support and work together to grow their businesses. Aalto Venture Garage Bootcamp is an intensive two week training program for the best startup teams. It is expected that more than 200 teams from all around the world will apply to the next Bootcamp in September.
01.07.2010 On the basis of the decision made by the Annual General Meeting, Metso has decided to grant a donation of EUR 1.9 million to Aalto University Foundation. This donation supports Aalto University´s financial capabilities to offer internationally competitive research and teaching services and helps Aalto University to meet its ambitious goals.
06.07.2010 The results of ACSI 2010 (Aalto Camp for Societal Innovation) innovation event were presented to the public on Monday 5 July at the White Hall in Helsinki. The ACSI 2010 pilot camp worked on projects for six customers.
09.07.2010 In the application period to universities in the spring 2010, 1796 students were accepted to Aalto University. Of the new students 436 will begin their studies in the Aalto University School of Economics, 213 in the School of Art and Design, and 1237 in the School of Science and Technology.
13.07.2010 The article “Should Good Stocks Have High Prices or High Returns?” by Markku Kaustia, Heidi Laukkanen, and Vesa Puttonen, published in the Financial Analyst Journal, was selected by Emerald Management Reviews as one of the best 50 articles published on business and economics in 2009. More than 15,000 articles from 400 top business and management journals were reviewed.
14.07.2010 A recent publication by Aalto University School of Science and Technology reviews the assumptions made by the management of Stora Enso – the largest paper producer in Europe – that led to the acquisition of the North American Consolidated Papers in the year 2000. With the merger Stora Enso attempted to grow into a truly global company in the forest industry.
23.07.2010 This summer Pori Jazz uses the latest technology to present its programme, artists and venues to the audience. The Jatsitatsi multitouch wall, created as a part of a research project, uses advanced technology in a novel way to provide the audience with new experiences in public spaces.
02.08.2010 Professor Olli Ikkala of the Department of Applied Physics in Aalto University School of Science and Technology is a partner in an international research consortium that has generated novel types of magnetic materials. The recent issue of the renowned publication Nature Nanotechnology contains an article ”Making flexible magnetic aerogels and stiff magnetic nanopaper using cellulose nanofibrils as templates” by a Swedish-Spanish-Finnish research consortium. It shows that a combination of cellulose nanofibers and magnetic nanoparticles allows, on the other hand, ultra-flexible porous magnetic materials and, on the other hand, mechanically strong magnetic nanopaper.
04.08.2010 This summer, as the rest of Finland is taking a holiday, a group of some 30 dedicated student entrepreneurs have been busy building their own companies. Backed up with coffee, wi-fi and a strong community spirit, these aspiring entrepreneurs are stationed at the Aalto Venture Garage, a 700 sq meter former industrial warehouse in Espoo, Finland.

16.08.2010 Researcher Jens Schmidt and Professor Thomas Keil of Aalto University School of Science and Technology have won the Glueck Best Paper Award of the Business Policy and Strategy division at the 2010 Academy of Management Meeting in Montreal. The winning paper is titled "Unique Demand Complementarities – A Demand-based Theory of Diversification".
18.08.2010 Satu Maaranen, who studies Fashion Design at the Aalto University School of Art and Design, won the Nordic Designers’ Nest Award with her women’s wear collection. According to the international panel, Maaranen’s strengths included the strong concept behind the collection and her Scandinavian touch.
27.08.2010 A nanoscience seminar arranged in honour of Risto Nieminen, the first Aalto Professor, attracted an audience of more than one hundred people to the Dipoli Conference Centre at Otaniemi in Espoo on 27 August 2010. The event was opened by University President Tuula Teeri, who illustrated her address with examples from professor Nieminen’s career and thanked him for his outstanding research work.

01.09.2010 The first opening of the academic year at Aalto University was celebrated on 1 September 2010 at the Aalto University School of Economics. The opening ceremony in Töölö was attended by approximately a thousand students and staff members, as well as friends of the university. In addition, students and staff members at other Aalto University campuses throughout Finland were able to watch the opening ceremony via live broadcast.
01.09.2010 In May 2010 the Aalto on Tracks project, an entirely student-run initiative, took over 80 people from the Aalto community by private train from Helsinki to the Shanghai World Expo in China. The trip included everything from lectures, case workshops and reading circuits on the train to university and company visits in Beijing and Shanghai. The students showed great initiative, creativity and responsibility in designing and implementing this project.
06.09.2010 Design students of Aalto University School of Art and Design created their own vision of the home of the future at Habitare fair. The Homework project was created using high-quality materials and comprises space, furniture, textiles and objects. Homework also presents the students’ perspective on what is important in a home.
06.09.2010 Professor Matti Keloharju has won the Best Conference Paper Award at the 2010 European Finance Association Meeting in Frankfurt. The title of the winning paper is “Do Smart Investors Outperform Dumb Investors?” and it is a joint work with Professors Mark Grinblatt (University of California in Los Angeles) and Juhani Linnainmaa (University of Chicago).
07.09.2010 By the beginning of September, hundreds of private individuals and nearly 60 businesses and organisations had donated to Aalto University’s basic capital. A total of EUR 163 million had been received in actual and promised donations. There are many reasons for making a donation, but all benefactors share a belief in the ability of Aalto University to continue building a better society and improving Finland’s competitiveness.
08.09.2010 Aalto University’s new students kicked off their first academic year with the events of an orientation week organised in late August/early September. The climax of the week was the Aalto First Experience event, celebrated on the university’s three campuses on Friday 3 September.

Cooperation with Aalto University offers Outokumpu the chance to harness top-level know-how and a multidisciplinary approach. 20.09.2010 The Master’s degree program of the Aalto University School of Economics has been ranked within the top thirty on the "Masters in Management Ranking 2010" list published by the Financial Times. The School of Economics was ranked 30th this year, up by one from 2009. The Financial Times ranking lists the best Master’s degree programs in the economic sciences from all over the world.

28.09.2010 Researchers from University of New South Wales (Australia), University of Melbourne (Australia), and Aalto University (Finland) have succeeded in demonstrating a high-fidelity detection scheme for the magnetic state of a single electron, that is, the spin. 13.10.2010 Valio Ltd is donating three million euro to the Aalto University Foundation and will start a unique form of collaboration with Aalto University to make Finnish marketing expertise the best in the world. Valio has a long tradition of collaboration with the academic community in the fields of biotechnology, nutritional science and milk technology, and is now extending that to include marketing. The co-operation agreement was signed on Wednesday 13th October 2010.
14.10.2010 In honour of its 75th anniversary, design company Artek has teamed up with Aalto University to organise a symposium entitled Alchemy of the Third Millennium at Media Centre Lume. The seminar, whose speakers include many international top names, can be attended live online.
15.10.2010 The American Ambassador of Finland Bruce Oreck handed over the prize for the winning team of the Intelligent Society, Innovation Cup winners held jointly with Aalto University and VTT. MetropolDRT is an Urban Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) concept. It is a new pioneering approach to solve the urban transport problem.

25.10.2010 In its meeting on 22nd October 2010, the board of Aalto University decided to approve an amendment to its bylaws and divide the Aalto University School of Science and Technology into four new schools of technology starting from 1st of January 2011.
25.10.2010 At its meeting on the 22nd October 2010, the Foundation Board of Aalto University appointed three new Deans. Professor Tuija Pulkkinen was appointed as Dean of the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering and Professor Ilkka Niemelä was appointed as Dean of the Aalto University School of Science for five years from 1.1.2011. Professor Jyrki Wallenius was appointed Dean of the Aalto University School of Economics for the year 2011.
25.10.2010 The Academic Affairs Committee of Aalto University, in its meeting on 25th October 2010, decided to appoint Professor Patrick Aebischer, currently President of EPFL, as a member of the board of Aalto University for a three-year period. He will replace Robert A. Brown, currently President of Boston University, whose term is ending now. Aebischer brings to the board a strong vision concerning the European university scene and both expertise and experience about change management for universities. He will start in his task on 1st of January 2011.
26.10.2010 Centre for Urban and Regional Research (YTK) is part of one of the three Nordic Centres of Excellence (NCoE) announced by NordForsk. Nordic Top-level Research Initiative in the fields of climate, energy and environment (Top-level Research Initiative) was launched in 2008 with a total budget of 400 million Danish kroner. The three announced NCoEs e are part of the climate change impact analysis and adaptation to sub-program.
26.10.2010 In 2011, the Aalto University School of Economics celebrates its first one hundred years as a university which began on 16 January 1911.
28.10.2010 At the end of October, Aalto University students of design will head for the Hirameki Design x Finland event and exhibition at Tokyo Designers’ Week, which will showcase Finnish design in Japan more extensively than ever before. For this professional event, the design students have created the ‘40 hours’ exhibition as well as the Näytös 10 fashion show.
05.11.2010 The Center for Markets in Transition CEMAT at the Aalto University School of Economics coordinates two key international projects in the Baltic Sea region. Rail Baltica Growth Corridor develops rail traffic, and BaltMet Promo builds the common identity and visibility of the Baltic Sea countries. Both projects have a special role in the Baltic Sea strategy of the European Union, and their main partner is the City of Helsinki. The proposals for action resulting from the projects have an impact on EU level decision making.
08.11.2010 Aalto-1 is expected to be launched into space in 2013 and the plan is that most of the design, construction and testing of the device will be carried out by students.
12.11.2010 Aalto University is hosting a new project aiming at creating new business opportunities and reducing poverty through innovative business enterprise together with the low-income individuals and communities in emerging markets, often termed as the Base of the Pyramid (BOP).

Professor Outi Krause was appointed Dean of the Aalto University School of Chemical Technology for a two-year term starting on 1 January 2011, and Professor Petri Varsta as the Dean of the Aalto University School of Engineering for the year 2011.

17.11.2010 A cost-efficient way to utilize solar energy under investigation at Aalto University.
19.11.2010 Students from Aalto University have developed a recyclable laptop computer together with students from Stanford University on a joint ME310 product development course. The project team included students of mechanical engineering, business and industrial design. The team's corporate partner was Autodesk, a manufacturer of industrial graphic design software.
26.11.2010 Academy Professor Riitta Hari will become Academician of Science. Riitta Hari is an internationally recognised and respected neuroscientist. She has developed methods and applications of human brain imaging and thereby contributed decisively to the progress of this branch of science.
01.12.2010 The distinguished career of Professor Yrjö Sotamaa, the longest-standing rector of the University of Art and Design Helsinki, was celebrated at an engaging farewell party at Media Centre Lume on 30 November.
02.12.2010 The objective of Aalto University's Data Centers to Finland (DC2F) research project is to create, in the server centres, the conditions and know-how that will enable future production of digital services energy-efficiently and without putting a strain on the environment.
07.12.2010 The European Business Schools ranking published in the Financial Times on 6 December placed Aalto University School of Economics 22nd, out of altogether 75 European business schools evaluated for the ranking. Top of the list was HEC Paris and second place was taken by London Business School. Aalto University School of Economics was the only Finnish business school to be listed.

Equipment including an eye tracker implements machine learning methods and infers from context and gaze direction what the viewer may be interested in, to learn more about.

17.12.2010 On Tuesday 7th December 2010 at the Design Factory, the chief innovation activist, Research Manager Anssi Tuulenmäki, introduced the audience to the world of the final projects for the innovation course. The objectives of the course were to find new questions as well as to provide abilities to dream and build new meanings for various things.
22.12.2010 The Aalto University Department of Media Technology and the Aalto Center for Entrepreneurship announce their collaboration with Futureful, a research-based start up. The cooperation will focus on the commercialization of cutting-edge research and embodies what the formation of Aalto University is all about; where science and art meet technology and business.
