Aalto University announces several postdoctoral research vacancies

07.01.2010 Aalto University is announcing several postdoctoral research posts in the University's different research fields. The vacancies announced are in the units that performed especially well in an international research assessment. Aalto University rewards these units with a total of fourteen postdoctoral research posts. In addition, other postdoctoral tasks of different lengths are announced vacant in the rewarded units.

Aalto University celebrates its opening on January 8

07.01.2010 Aalto University is celebrating its opening on Friday 8 January 2010. The celebrations will be visible in Helsinki’s city centre in the afternoon when a procession of the University’s guests relocates from Finlandia House to the Museum of Modern Art Kiasma. Due to the procession, special arrangements will be implemented concerning the traffic along Mannerheimintie.

Uusimaa awarded the European Entrepreneurial Region 2012 – Aalto University strongly involved

11.02.2010 The EU Committee of the Regions has labelled Helsinki-Uusimaa as the European Entrepreneurial Region (EER) 2012. The decision was made public Feb 11, 2010 at the Committee meeting in Brussels. Granted for the first time, the award attracted 36 regional nominees. The title was apportioned to three regions for the year 2011 and three for 2012. The EER award serves as recognition to those areas with the most credible plan of action promoting entrepreneurship with realistic foresight and outstanding political vision.

Virpi Tuunainen the new director of the Aalto University Service Factory

03.03.2010 Professor Virpi Tuunainen was appointed the new director of the Aalto University Service Factory on 1st January 2010. Tuunainen is Professor of Information Systems Science at the Aalto University School of Economics.

Researchers develop a novel sensor to measure small magnetic fields

05.03.2010 The results of the research conducted at the Low Temperature Laboratory of the Aalto University School of Science and Technology and Scuola Normal Superiore were published in the Nature Physics online edition on 28th February.

Aalto University studies brain activity in a multidisciplinary research group

15.03.2010 Researchers of aivoAALTO introduced the multidisciplinary brain research of Aalto University to the general public on open lectures held 11 March in Otaniemi. The event was opened by the director of aivoAALTO, Academy Professor Riitta Hari, who introduced some methods used in brain imaging. The lecture series also discussed brain plasticity and the use of economics games and cinema in human brain research.

The results of students' product development projects made public in Design Factory

26.04.2010 A gala event for the Product Development Project, in which the results of 13 multidisciplinary student projects were made public, was held in Design Factory on 23.4. The prototypes created in the projects were developed in collaboration with businesses and international partners.

Communicating knowledge at the crossroads of art, technology and business

28.04.2010 In spring 2009 Aalto University launched a call for new ideas for further development of teaching and learning in the new university. Altogether 180 proposals were submitted, of which 12 were selected to best meet the criteria set for the new "Aalto Courses": innovative course content, effective teaching practices, multidisciplinary co-operation, societal impact, and multi-cultural interaction.

Over 15,400 applicants to Aalto University Schools

29.04.2010 This year a record number of applicants sought admission to Aalto University's three schools, totalling over 15,400. 10,738 applicants applied in the joint application period for Aalto University Schools, whilst 4,668 applied directly for Master's level studies.

Wärtsilä donates one million to Aalto University

11.05.2010 Wärtsilä has decided to donate a total of EUR 1.5 million to support science, research and education at Finnish universities. The support is divided as follows: EUR 1 million to the Aalto University Endowment Fund, EUR 300,000 to Hanken School of Economics, and EUR 200,000 to Åbo Akademi University Endowment Fund.

Aalto in Shanghai project brings the message of Aalto University to Shanghai World Expo

€1.2 million donation for Aalto University from the commercial sector

A Sino-Finnish Cooperation Platform Is Opened in Shanghai

25.05.2010 Finnish Aalto University and Chinese Tongji University have established a new cooperation platform in Shanghai called Aalto-Tongji Design Factory. It’s focusing on innovative design, research and cooperation. The space has been designed and built during this spring and it will be opened May 25th in Zhangwu Campus of Tongji University.

Aalto University to organize a symposium on sustainable development in June

26.05.2010 A multidisciplinary research group of Aalto University, Helsinki University and Oulu University will organize an international crossdisciplinary symposium for doctoral students from 14 to 17 June in Sannainen. A total of 73 applications were received, and 46 participants admitted, among them participants from Yale and Cambridge.

Graphic Design Students Design a New Look for Blue1 Planes

26.05.2010 The Aalto University School of Art and Design and Blue1 Airlines have entered into a partnership for the design of the outward appearance of the company’s airplanes. Blue1 will acquire a new model of plane for its fleet and will at the same time modernise the look of the aircraft one at a time, starting in autumn 2010.

Finnish researchers involved in the development of synthetic biomaterials

27.05.2010 An international team has prepared a library of synthetic biomaterials, so-called Janus-molecules, that mimic cell membranes. Self-assembled nanostructures which they call "dendrimersomes" may be broadly useful for delivering cancer drugs safely to the body. The study appeared in Science on 21st May.

Professor Grätzel wins the Millennium Technology Prize for dye-sensitized solar cells

10.06.2010 The Winner of the 2010 Millennium Technology Prize is Professor Michael Grätzel from Switzerland for his third generation, low cost, dye-sensitized solar cells. President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen handed the EUR 800,000 Grand Prize and the prize trophy “Peak” to Professor Grätzel today at the Grand Award Ceremony at the Finnish National Opera, Helsinki.

Aalto University innovation camp yields creative ideas

06.07.2010 The results of ACSI 2010 (Aalto Camp for Societal Innovation) innovation event were presented to the public on Monday 5 July at the White Hall in Helsinki. The ACSI 2010 pilot camp worked on projects for six customers.

Aalto University accepted 1796 new students

09.07.2010 In the application period to universities in the spring 2010, 1796 students were accepted to Aalto University. Of the new students 436 will begin their studies in the Aalto University School of Economics, 213 in the School of Art and Design, and 1237 in the School of Science and Technology.

13.07.2010 The article “Should Good Stocks Have High Prices or High Returns?” by Markku Kaustia, Heidi Laukkanen, and Vesa Puttonen, published in the Financial Analyst Journal, was selected by Emerald Management Reviews as one of the best 50 articles published on business and economics in 2009. More than 15,000 articles from 400 top business and management journals were reviewed.

A study reviews the reasons for the failure of the American merger of Stora Enso

14.07.2010 A recent publication by Aalto University School of Science and Technology reviews the assumptions made by the management of Stora Enso – the largest paper producer in Europe – that led to the acquisition of the North American Consolidated Papers in the year 2000. With the merger Stora Enso attempted to grow into a truly global company in the forest industry.

23.07.2010 This summer Pori Jazz uses the latest technology to present its programme, artists and venues to the audience. The Jatsitatsi multitouch wall, created as a part of a research project, uses advanced technology in a novel way to provide the audience with new experiences in public spaces.

New materials out of magnetic nanocellulose

02.08.2010 Professor Olli Ikkala of the Department of Applied Physics in Aalto University School of Science and Technology is a partner in an international research consortium that has generated novel types of magnetic materials. The recent issue of the renowned publication Nature Nanotechnology contains an article ”Making flexible magnetic aerogels and stiff magnetic nanopaper using cellulose nanofibrils as templates” by a Swedish-Spanish-Finnish research consortium. It shows that a combination of cellulose nanofibers and magnetic nanoparticles allows, on the other hand, ultra-flexible porous magnetic materials and, on the other hand, mechanically strong magnetic nanopaper.

Summer of Startups employs 35 students from ten different universities

04.08.2010 This summer, as the rest of Finland is taking a holiday, a group of some 30 dedicated student entrepreneurs have been busy building their own companies. Backed up with coffee, wi-fi and a strong community spirit, these aspiring entrepreneurs are stationed at the Aalto Venture Garage, a 700 sq meter former industrial warehouse in Espoo, Finland.

The Glueck Best Paper Award to the School of Science and Technology

16.08.2010 Researcher Jens Schmidt and Professor Thomas Keil of Aalto University School of Science and Technology have won the Glueck Best Paper Award of the Business Policy and Strategy division at the 2010 Academy of Management Meeting in Montreal. The winning paper is titled "Unique Demand Complementarities – A Demand-based Theory of Diversification".

Satu Maaranen wins Designers' Nest Award

18.08.2010 Satu Maaranen, who studies Fashion Design at the Aalto University School of Art and Design, won the Nordic Designers’ Nest Award with her women’s wear collection. According to the international panel, Maaranen’s strengths included the strong concept behind the collection and her Scandinavian touch.

Aalto Professor Risto Nieminen: an appointment recognising our research efforts

27.08.2010 A nanoscience seminar arranged in honour of Risto Nieminen, the first Aalto Professor, attracted an audience of more than one hundred people to the Dipoli Conference Centre at Otaniemi in Espoo on 27 August 2010. The event was opened by University President Tuula Teeri, who illustrated her address with examples from professor Nieminen’s career and thanked him for his outstanding research work.

01.09.2010 The first opening of the academic year at Aalto University was celebrated on 1 September 2010 at the Aalto University School of Economics. The opening ceremony in Töölö was attended by approximately a thousand students and staff members, as well as friends of the university. In addition, students and staff members at other Aalto University campuses throughout Finland were able to watch the opening ceremony via live broadcast.

Aalto on Tracks wins the first annual Student Initiative of the Year

01.09.2010 In May 2010 the Aalto on Tracks project, an entirely student-run initiative, took over 80 people from the Aalto community by private train from Helsinki to the Shanghai World Expo in China. The trip included everything from lectures, case workshops and reading circuits on the train to university and company visits in Beijing and Shanghai. The students showed great initiative, creativity and responsibility in designing and implementing this project.

Design students welcome habitare visitors home

06.09.2010 Design students of Aalto University School of Art and Design created their own vision of the home of the future at Habitare fair. The Homework project was created using high-quality materials and comprises space, furniture, textiles and objects. Homework also presents the students’ perspective on what is important in a home.

Matti Keloharju wins the EFA 2010 Best Conference Paper Award

06.09.2010 Professor Matti Keloharju has won the Best Conference Paper Award at the 2010 European Finance Association Meeting in Frankfurt. The title of the winning paper is “Do Smart Investors Outperform Dumb Investors?” and it is a joint work with Professors Mark Grinblatt (University of California in Los Angeles) and Juhani Linnainmaa (University of Chicago).

Supporters Share Faith in Aalto University’s Possibilities

07.09.2010 By the beginning of September, hundreds of private individuals and nearly 60 businesses and organisations had donated to Aalto University’s basic capital. A total of EUR 163 million had been received in actual and promised donations. There are many reasons for making a donation, but all benefactors share a belief in the ability of Aalto University to continue building a better society and improving Finland’s competitiveness.

Detector for the single-electron magnet discovered – pathway to quantum computing

28.09.2010 Researchers from University of New South Wales (Australia), University of Melbourne (Australia), and Aalto University (Finland) have succeeded in demonstrating a high-fidelity detection scheme for the magnetic state of a single electron, that is, the spin. Their work was published in Nature on 26 September.

Valio donates 3 million euro to Aalto University

13.10.2010 Valio Ltd is donating three million euro to the Aalto University Foundation and will start a unique form of collaboration with Aalto University to make Finnish marketing expertise the best in the world. Valio has a long tradition of collaboration with the academic community in the fields of biotechnology, nutritional science and milk technology, and is now extending that to include marketing. The co-operation agreement was signed on Wednesday 13th October 2010.

Concept for solving transport problem wins Intelligent Society Innovation Cup 2010

15.10.2010 The American Ambassador of Finland Bruce Oreck handed over the prize for the winning team of the Intelligent Society, Innovation Cup winners held jointly with Aalto University and VTT. MetropolDRT is an Urban Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) concept. It is a new pioneering approach to solve the urban transport problem.

Aalto University School of Science and Technology to be divided into four new schools

25.10.2010 In its meeting on 22nd October 2010, the board of Aalto University decided to approve an amendment to its bylaws and divide the Aalto University School of Science and Technology into four new schools of technology starting from 1st of January 2011.

The Board Appointed Three New Deans

25.10.2010 At its meeting on the 22nd October 2010, the Foundation Board of Aalto University appointed three new Deans. Professor Tuija Pulkkinen was appointed as Dean of the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering and Professor Ilkka Niemelä was appointed as Dean of the Aalto University School of Science for five years from 1.1.2011. Professor Jyrki Wallenius was appointed Dean of the Aalto University School of Economics for the year 2011.

Professor Patrick Aebischer to join the Aalto University Board

25.10.2010 The Academic Affairs Committee of Aalto University, in its meeting on 25th October 2010, decided to appoint Professor Patrick Aebischer, currently President of EPFL, as a member of the board of Aalto University for a three-year period. He will replace Robert A. Brown, currently President of Boston University, whose term is ending now. Aebischer brings to the board a strong vision concerning the European university scene and both expertise and experience about change management for universities. He will start in his task on 1st of January 2011.

26.10.2010 Centre for Urban and Regional Research (YTK) is part of one of the three Nordic Centres of Excellence (NCoE) announced by NordForsk. Nordic Top-level Research Initiative in the fields of climate, energy and environment (Top-level Research Initiative) was launched in 2008 with a total budget of 400 million Danish kroner. The three announced NCoEs e are part of the climate change impact analysis and adaptation to sub-program.
