Soil moisture can now be measured from an aircraft
09.08.2011 Aalto University is one of the few European universities to have its own aircraft in research use. The measurement equipment installed in the plane has been used to study soil moisture and microwave radiation as well as to locate the site of oil leaks. Airborne measurements often supplement studies carried out on land and in space.

What makes this interesting to us is that the new unit is inspired by Aalto University Design Factory and will be created as a partnership between the two universities.
New nanoscale parameter by Aalto University resolves dilemmas on silicon property
18.08.2011 The new discovery by Aalto University can have major impact on future nanoscale device design, such as ultraviolet photo detectors and drug delivery. In bulk size, many materials like silicon are as brittle as glass. In nanoparticle size, the same material can be compressed into half their size without breaking them. The new discovery was made by an international research group led by Professor Roman Nowak from Aalto University.

19.08.2011 Out of 137 proposals, the European Commission has in July 2011 selected 10 new jointly developed Erasmus Mundus Doctoral programmes to start in autumn 2012. Aalto University is a degree-awarding partner in an international doctoral programme on Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Services.
