04.10.2011 Two research groups from the Aalto University School of Chemical Technology are searching for ways in which to make lithium-ion batteries safer and more resistant to moisture and temperatures. The materials chosen can influence these properties.
Renovation of Otakaari 1 begun 1 October
04.10.2011 During the second phase of renovation the Y and M wings will be repaired. Lecture halls located in the Y wing will be in University’s use for the majority of the renovation project. The M wing will be completed in October 2012 and the Y wing in March 2013. The D and E lecture halls will be repaired during the summer of 2012. The exact time for repair work on other lecture halls will be specified at a later time.
EU grant for a basic component of the quantum computer
06.10.2011 Dr. Mikko Möttönen, 31, has been granted substantial funding from the European Research Council (ERC) within its call for Starting Grants. Dr. Möttönen was granted a funding of EUR 1.5 million for five years.

Department of Design in Co-Core Seoul
06.10.2011 The Co-Core International Art & Design Critiques is held this week in Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. Aalto University´s Department of Design is partaking in the event with faculty and students. Ingmar Björkman appointed as Dean of Aalto University School of Economics
11.10.2011 At its meeting on the 7th October 2011, the Board of Aalto University appointed Professor Ingmar Björkman, PhD (born 1959) as Dean of the Aalto University School of Economics for five years starting on 1 January 2012. Björkman is to follow Jyrki Wallenius who was appointed Dean of the Aalto University School of Economics for the year 2011.

17.10.2011 In her dissertation, Emilia Rautkylä studied the connection between mood and the effects that light has on people’s alertness. The dissertation, entitled ‘Tutkimusmenetelmät ja neurofysiologiset mekanismit päiväaikaisen valoaltistuksen aiheuttamien vireysvaikutusten taustalla’(Research Methods and Neurophysiological Mechanisms behind the Alerting Effects of Daytime Light Exposure), was examined at Aalto University School of Engineering on Friday 14 October.
A new campus garden planned for the Otaniemi campus area

Aalto University Magazine – an innovative university publication
19.10.2011 Aalto University will begin publishing Aalto University Magazine, a new magazine for the university’s interest groups. The first issue will come out at the turn of October and November and cover risks and entrepreneurship. The magazine, mainly aimed at alumni and partners, presents Aalto University’s important role in building a better world and a stronger Finland. The magazine also discusses the multidisciplinary nature of the university community, which entails encounters between technology, art and economics.
Information on climate change now at one address Ilmasto-opas.fi
20.10.2011 Ilmasto-opas.fi, a new website bringing together climate information under one address, was opened today. The website provides information about the Finnish climate and climate change, analysed down to individual regions. The Swedish and English versions of the site will be launched later this year.

Virtual acoustics researcher Tapio Lokki awarded for the social impact of his work
28.10.2011 Adjunct Professor, Academy Research Fellow Tapio Lokki has been awarded the Academy of Finland Award for social impact. Lokki and his research team at the Department of Media Technology, Aalto University School of Science, are working to develop physically-based room acoustic modelling methods that can be used to create virtual auditory environments. Their research will help us to better understand and predict the acoustics of acoustically demanding spaces, such as concert halls.
