Tenure Track or Tenured Position in Water Engineering

Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland – the Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. The university's ambitious goal is to rank among the top universities in the world in its areas of specialization. At Aalto there are 20,000 students with around 75,000 alumni. We have a staff of 4,500 including 300 professors.

Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for:

TENURE TRACK OR TENURED POSITION IN WATER ENGINEERING which can be filled on any level from assistant professor to full professor

The tenure track is open to talented individuals who have excellent potential for a scientific career. On the basis of their experience and competence, applicants will be placed on any of the three levels of the tenure track system: assistant professor, associate professor or full professor. The candidates for the first mentioned level are appointed for a fixed term, while the candidates for associate professor positions are appointed either permanently or for a fixed term. The full professor positions are permanent positions.

Throughout their careers, those under the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher education, to follow the advances of their field, to take part in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field. Individuals placed on the Aalto University tenure track for professors have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of their scope of duty.

The above mentioned position is located in the water engineering group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, see http://civil.aalto.fi/en/. The water engineering group conducts research related to environmental hydraulics, water resources management, water supply and sanitation, hydrology, and water and development. The group currently consists of three professors, five lecturers, and five post-doctoral researchers together with research scientists, doctoral students and technical staff, total staff being around 40. The group has research facilities for conducting comprehensive water chemistry and soil water analyses, as well as for performing hydraulic research. Water engineering couples natural water resources and water supply and sanitation, and strives for holistic understanding of processes at the levels of catchment, stream, and built environment, as well as related policies and governance issues. The scientific methods rely on strong expertise of computational methods, cross-disciplinary data analysis, concentrated field investigations, and exploitation of water laboratory and hydraulic flume facilities.

The present call for applications is cross-disciplinary and applicants in all fields of water engineering are invited to apply. However, preference will be given to candidates with research fields complementing and supporting the current strong areas of the Department. In 2009, an external panel of experts carried out a research assessment exercise at Aalto University. To see the entire assessment, go to http://www.aalto.fi/en/research/rae/
