08/05/13: Masters of Aalto - the most inspiring event and exhibition of the spring

Dreams made real showcased at the Masters of Aalto event in Sörnäinen in May

Dreams and visions become reality as the newly graduates from Aalto University present their thesis projects at the Masters of Aalto 2013 year show. The exhibition is held in Sörnäinen, Helsinki from 8 to 26 May.

Masters of Aalto offers the visitor a lively presentation of studies at Aalto University and introduces the societal role the university has. Masters of Aalto showcases the works of 80 graduates from the School of Arts, Design, and Architecture, the School of Business and the schools of technology.

The venue is a former granary, a 121-year-old brick building at the corner of Hämeentie and Lautatarhankatu, which for a long time functioned as a warehouse. The premises managed by the City of Helsinki will now be opened to the public for the first time.

The students and alumni of Aalto University are strongly involved in the planning and design of Masters of Aalto. They are responsible for the event's visual identity, the web design, and the exhibition's architecture, to mention a few.

The theme for this year’s show is Dreams Made Real. The thematic concept of the exhibition is planned by Designer Arni Aromaa. Aromaa is the founder and creative director of Pentagon Design and is an Aalto University's alumnus.

’Finns are very good in realism based on facts, but to create something new requires also dreaming and visioning. The exhibition provides a concrete view on dreams made real by students at Aalto University. This is the main message for example to young people planning their future studies,’ Aromaa describes.

In addition to the exhibition, Masters of Aalto invites its visitors to attend public events, seminars, and workshops in May. During the event, there are products on sale by the young designers and a café by students.

Masters of Aalto on 8–26 May 2013, Kruununmakasiini, Hämeentie 39, Helsinki. The exhibition is open Monday–Friday at 12–20 and during the weekends at 12–18. Free entrance.

Follow the progress of Masters of Aalto at moa.aalto.fi

Environmental awareness plays a significant role in the production of Masters of Aalto. The event utilises the EcoCompass system of the Helsinki Environment Centre.

The pilot programme Art & Technology that started in fall 2012 brings together a group of talented students from within Aalto University to test their skills and experiment in the multidisciplinary field of media art, combining technology, art and design. The result of this experiment will be showcased in the Warehouse Tech exhibition that presents media and electronic art over two weeks in L3 Gallery, in Jätkäsaari.

A wide variety of working methods have been used, such as a study of ‘fugly’ phenomena on the Internet, and the recording of personal everyday data, to EEG brain scans controlling non-newtonian liquids. The exhibition is sure to bring surprise and delight to all visitors!

What happens when you cram 100 Aalto students in Trans-Siberian train to take them to China? How about if you take a cruise ship with them to Brazil? And what are the plans for Aalto in Africa? Aalto on Tracks and Aalto on Waves projects took Aalto to the two opposite sides of the world. They were both student initiated and coordinated projects, organized with enormous passion and effort. The goal was to to build connections to the receiving countries, create an unforgettable learning experience and last but not least – unite Aalto people. Aalto in Africa is the next Aalto eXperience, taking Aalto to South Africa in autumn 2013 to learn from and co-create with local communities.

Aalto on the Move exhibition presents photos by Timo Idänheimo and Tuure Laurinolli, posters by Jyri Tuulos and Tuomas Saikkonen and videos directed by Anna Berg, Dimitri Paile and Johannes Söderström. The exhibition is produced by Aalto Media Factory and was shown in AMF gallery in March.

The exhibition opening party with authentic Tracks’ and Waves’ spirit will be held on Friday 17th May starting at 5 pm. Welcome!

24/05/13: Doctoral dissertation: The effect of flow equalization and low-rate prefermentation on the activated sludge process and biological nutrient removal

M.Sc. Anna Mikola: Doctoral dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology to be presented with due permission of the Aalto University School of Engineering for public examination and debate in Auditorium R1 (Rakentajanaukio 4 A) on the 24th of May 2013 at 12 noon. The effect of flow equalization and low-rate prefermentation on the activated sludge process and biological nutrient removal (suomeksi Virtaaman tasauksen ja esifermennoinnin vaikutus aktiivilieteprosessiin ja biologiseen ravinteiden poistoon).

The flow and load variations in the wastewater plant influent complicate the operation of the biological treatment process and harm the process performance. Moreover, the plant influent is often lacking readily biodegradable organic matter needed for the biological nutrient removal. In this research project, the primary clarifiers at the Pihlajaniemi wastewater treatment plant in Savonlinna were modified in order to tackle the problems caused by flow variation and the lack of suitable organic matter.

Diurnal flow variations were efficiently levelled out in the existing primary clarifier basin volume. Also, a significant amount of organic matter was transformed into a more accessible form for the biological nutrient removal bacteria when only flow equalization was in operation. The main improvement in the biological process performance was observed with nitrification and with better hydraulic control of the process. Moreover, sludge production was decreased. In practice, the tested modifications enable an increase in the process capacity without large investments and savings in the treatment of biosolids. This process modification could be widely implemented in Finland because the majority of middle-sized and large WWTPs have primary clarifiers.

Programme:

Dean, professor Ingmar Björkman, Welcome and foreword

Professor Jay Barney, What is strategic management?

After briefly discussing what strategic management is not, Professor Barney will discuss the two major competing theories explaining why some firms outperform others. The first theory focuses on identifying attractive industries and attributes superior performance to monopoly power. The second, known as resource-based theory, focuses on rare and costly-to-copy firm resources and capabilities. It attributes superior performance to the ability some firms have to address customer needs more effectively than their competitors. Some of the managerial implications of resource-based theory will also be discussed.
