The title of thesis is “Methods for Damping Inter-Area Oscillations in the Nordic Power System”
The motivation for this thesis has been to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms affecting the damping of inter-area oscillations in the Nordic power system. The topic is important, because low-frequency inter-area oscillations set limits on the transfer capability when power is transferred from Finland to the other Nordic countries over AC transmission lines. In this thesis the damping of inter-area oscillations in the Nordic system has been studied, with the emphasis on the Finnish
part of the grid.
New methods have been introduced for controllability assessment with the full scale model of the Nordic power system. Two of the methods can be used with both nonlinear and linear power system models. A third method was introduced to be used with non-linear system models.
The developed techniques have also been used to find control settings that make the power system stabilizers on the largest generators in Finland effective on damping inter-area oscillations (Olkiluoto, Loviisa, and Meri-Pori). The new power system stabilizers made it possible for the transmission system operator to raise the power transfer limits from Finland to Sweden.
The effects on damping with use of power system stabilizers on generators, controlled shunt compensation (SVC), controlled series compensation (TCSC), and power modulation with HVDC have been studied.
