Virpi Tuunainen the new director of the Aalto University Service Factory

Professor Virpi Tuunainen was appointed the new director of the Aalto University Service Factory on 1st January 2010. Tuunainen is Professor of Information Systems Science at the Aalto University School of Economics.

She has been the Professor of Information Systems Science (information and service management) in the Department of Business Technology at the Aalto University School of Economics since the year 2000. Professor Tuunainen has been leading the way in electronic business research, and she has done research both in Finland and overseas. At the moment, Professor Tuunainen's research focuses on ICT enabled or supported service innovations, electronic and mobile business and business models, software business and real-time economy.

- The Service Factory's activities are currently being reorganized. At this stage, hopes are high and many opportunities and challenges are presenting themselves. Our most important task is to find, within Aalto University, theme areas and theme groups involved in research on services which are very competitive and of interest to society and companies and which produce contents for services-related teaching, Professor Tuunainen tells.

The previous director of the Service Factory, Professor Kristian Möller, continues as Professor of Marketing at the Aalto University School of Economics, as Director of the Business Networks focus area and as a member of the Service Factory's steering group.  Recently Professor Möller received the acclaimed IBM Faculty Award 2009, which was given as recognition of the work he has done to promote the Service Factory.

In addition to Professor Tuunainen, the core team of the Service Factory includes Research Director Risto Rajala, Academic Community Coordinator Tuuli Mattelmäki, Education Coordinator Mika Helenius, and Coordinator Anna Multanen.

The Service Factory is the hub of service expertise in Aalto University's Schools. The main goal of the Service Factory is to support Aalto University's strategy to become a world-class multidisciplinary university. The Service Factory aims for significant world-class results to be created through multidisciplinary research, research-based teaching and company partnerships.

The goal of the Service Factory in 2010 is to realize and coordinate long-term research aimed at societal impacts in the theme areas, which are to be selected during the spring. The goals also include the development of Aalto University's common units of its master's programmes , improvement in opportunities for further study, and development of the Executive Education training. The Service Factory cooperates in services development with leading companies in the service sector as well as with other operators in the area.
