Aalto in Shanghai
Aalto in Shanghai project brings together activities of Aalto University in China and with its Chinese partners.
Aalto in Shanghai consists of various types of projects. The main messages and actions address the topic of the Shanghai World Expo “Better City – Better Life”. The Shanghai World Expo 2010 took place 1.5.–31.10.2010. There were some 200 countries attending and as many as 70 million visitors were expected. The Finnish pavilion at the exhibition area was called “Kirnu”. The pavilion had an area of approximately 3000 m2 and was expected to host around 30 000 visitors every day. Many Aalto in Shanghai events took place at the Kirnu. Finland’s participation to the Shanghai World Expo 2010 was coordinated, planned and carried out by Finpro.
All the projects were unified by the main messages that were visible in all action. The main messages are the following:
- Multidisciplinary interaction with different actors
- Linking to topical and real global issues
- Uniting theory and practice

Aalto-Tongji Design Factory
ATDF Opening 25.5.2010, 12–16pm
Aalto-Tongji Design Factory is a concrete cooperative project shared by the Aalto University and the Tongji University as well as the starting point of a shared future. ATDF is a physical place that brings together people and activities on the Tongji campus. It is a platform where students and researchers encounter enterprises and society. ATDF is also testing how the Design Factory concept functions and develops in a different culture. ATDF hosts various multidisciplinary and international courses, happenings, projects and initiatives. In the future ADTF will provide the basis for Aalto University’s Asian operations.

Workshop II: August-September 2010
Aalto Lab Shanghai is a joint project of Aalto University, Tongji University and IDEO Shanghai, which involves a multidisciplinary team of students from both universities. The main goal of the Aalto LAB is to make the world a better place to live. The key themes for reaching the successful outcome of this project are sustainability, learning and sharing. The research preceding the workshops seeks to understand the connection between urbanization and rural depopulation. The concrete implementation of the project site is located in the Xianqiao village, on the island of Chongming. Seven students from Aalto University are participating in the project.

Helsinki Higher Education Days
Seminar: 28.–29.5.2010 at Kirnu
HERA (Helsinki Education and Research Area) organizes a two-day seminar on higher education of the Helsinki metropolitan area. The seminar is held at the Kirnu pavilion. Aalto University and Helsinki University will host the first of the two seminar days on May, 28th. The selected topics include design, social media, transportation, medicine and biology. The event after the seminar will offer an opportunity for networking. The universities of applied sciences of the Helsinki region will organize the second seminar day.

24 Chinese Experiences in Finland
Helsinki Higher Education Days 28.–29.5.2010, ATDF 30.5. onwards
The aim of this project is to tell how Chinese students of Aalto University have experienced their time and studies in Finland. The results of the project will include a documentary film on the daily lives of a few Chinese students, an installation and a brochure, which will all be available to the public at different events during the Shanghai World Expo.
Aalto on Tracks

Aalto on Tracks will take 100 students, personnel and partners of Aalto University to the Shanghai World Expo on a train specifically reserved for this project. The journey will be an unforgettable trip and a new learning experience.

Aalto University School of Art and Design in Kirnu

The Aalto University School of Art and Design is taking part in assembling the world’s largest textile wall, which will be erected on the exhibition floor at the Finnish pavilion Kirnu, as well as designing the working clothing for the Kirnu guides.
Cumulus Conference and Exhibition
Conference 7.–10.9.2010
Cumulus is an international partnership network of over 150 Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media around the world. They will be organizing a three-day conference and a 20th anniversary exhibition in September 2010. The University of Tongji will host the conference, and its theme is named “Young Creators for a Better City & Better Life”. The conference will explore where and how the young generation of designers can improve the shared environment and life in a creative way, driven by their talent and sense of responsibility.

Cooperation with CIMO

Aalto University interacts with the Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) at Shanghai World Expo. Alumni of Aalto University will take part in a joint alumni event organized by CIMO, HERA and various universities of applied sciences at the Kirnu pavilion on June 3rd 2010.
In addition to this CIMO will organize a “Sharing Inspiration” seminar in late October, where professor Olli Varis of the Aalto University will present the Aalto Water Lab project.
Ubi-Health’10 and Sharing Health
31.5.–2.6.2010 at Kirnu and High-Tech Park (ZhangJiang Park)
The Ubi-Health´10 is an international workshop on Ubiquitous Healthcare, Welfare Services and Supporting Technologies, which provides a forum for the latest services, technologies and researches in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) assisted healthcare and wellbeing. A peer-review conference is a part of the event.
Participants include clinicians, hospital administrators, IT professionals, researchers, educators, solutions vendors, device manufacturers, system designers, integrators and consultants. Ubi-Health'10 is also an important international forum for e-Health associated cooperative bodies such as ITU, WHO and APEC. The program involves selected keynote speakers focusing on burning topics of eHealth, as well as overviews of ongoing projects and predictions of future scenarios.

CEMAT “Boosting Nordic-Chinese businesses”
Seminar: week 41 at Kirnu
CEMAT Symposium is a one-day event, which will be held at the Shanghai World Expo during week 41. The general themes are the two-way trade and internationalization of the capital and the know-how. Discussion topics include the Western countries’ traditional manufacturing investments in China, and network based on cooperation, which has become popular in creative industries recently. In addition the symposium deals with the growing Chinese investments in Western countries, including the Nordic countries, and views the competition among countries branding themselves to attract investment. This links the symposium to the general themes of the Expo.
The symposium consists of two panel discussions with panelists representing research, economy and local governance. Keynote speakers have been invited to enliven the debate and the audience will also enjoy an audio-visual show, which portrays interviews of many prominent figures. Symposium partners are, inter alia, Finpro, Fudan University Center and the Nordic NIAS (Nordic Institute of Asian Studies).
