Research gives predictive economic information on international markets

Research center CEMAT publishes predictive economic reviews online for the benefit of both businesses and researchers.

–The previous financial crisis, at the latest, proved that universities are expected to provide also future-oriented research and analysis, not just research of the existing situation or of the past, emphasizes Riitta Kosonen, director of the research center CEMAT.

–A couple of years ago we changed our financial reporting and made it even more future oriented than before. We also decided to publish this material online so that the information would be in reach of all who need it, says Kosonen.

Information based on exhaustive data and wide research

The Center for Markets in Transition (CEMAT) of the Aalto University School of Economics publishes reviews of the economic prospects of Russia, the Baltic region and China twice a year. In addition, a separate review is published of North-West Russia, which is a central area for Finnish businesses operating in Russia.

The reviews by CEMAT are based on exhaustive data, which combines macro prognoses of different research institutions, barometers measuring the expectations of businesses and interview responses of CEMAT’s business partners.

–Due to our good contacts, we have in our interview bank about 700 businesses, from which we can select a part for each review, says Kosonen.

–In addition, we do fieldwork all the time, and we utilize in the reports also our on-going basic research. In my opinion, this is a good example of how the University can use its own basic research and that of other research institutions innovatively, Kosonen continues.

In the future, the reviews can contain even more detailed information on Russia, since CEMAT and the Small Business Center of the Aalto University School of Economics have opened a joint representative office in St. Petersburg. This will help both the collection of data and interaction with Russian universities and research institutions.

–We receive constant praise for our economic reviews, for instance via e-mail. This encourages us to keep developing our reporting practices, says Kosonen.
