Design contest Builders of the future
Aalto University and the Association of Professional Graphic Designers in Finland Grafia and the Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo organised cooperatively a design contest for a memorial to the donors who provided funds for the University’s endowment capital. The contest was open to Aalto students, staff members and alumni.
Winner and other awarded proposals were declared February 1 at 2 pm in Finlandia, Lämpömiehenkuja 2. Awarded proposals are:
First prize 10 000 e: Noste by Ossi Konttinen
Jury´s comments: Beautiful and harmonious design that would make an excellent landmark and enliven the landscape. The fact that Noste could improve community spirit at encounters at Aalto University was one of the main reasons for its success.
Second prize 5 000 e: Sattuma by Inni Pärnänen
Jury´s Comments: The design has captured the visual identity of Aalto University in a fresh way and the contributors to the basic capital of the university have been taken into consideration in a beautiful way.
Third prize 3 000 e: Kolme kuutiota by Ilari Pirttilahti
Timeless, modern and impressive work of art.
Honorary mention: Ajatustila by Joonas Ala-Karvia and Ilkka Ala-Fossi
Jury´scomments: The fact that the design creates an attractive space for enjoying free time or spending a short but refreshing break is particularly positive. The honorary mention was awarded due to the design’s communal merits.

Objective and purpose of the contest
The objective of this contest is to create a memorial for the donors who contributed to the endowment capital of Aalto University. Our desire is to use the memorial as a visible demonstration of our gratitude towards individuals and organisations that provided support for the launch of Aalto University.
Aalto is a new international university that builds on Finnish strengths. Aalto University actively explores ways with which to exploit its scientifically and artistically multidisciplinary nature. The operations of Aalto University rest on a long-term approach to fundamental research and artistic activity that provides a solid foundation for our teaching as well as creative development and innovation functions. The goal is for Aalto University to number among the world’s finest institutes of higher learning by the year 2020.

Contest work
The objective of the contest is to design a memorial to the individuals, companies and foundations that made a contribution to the endowment capital of Aalto University. The names of donors will be included in the memorial. At the time of the design contest’s launch, some 1,200 donors had contribut
The memorial must be permanent, but its location does not necessarily have to be predetermined. Indoor and outdoor designs will both be considered. The designers are free to make proposals on the size, scale, location and material of the memorial – the final location of the winning design will be chosen through negotiations involving the designer and Aalto University. A maximum of €100,000 has been set aside for the realisation of the memorial, including compensation for design work.Only unpublished works will be considered. Each participant / participant group may submit at most three proposals.
Participants
The contest is open to individual or team submissions from all Aalto University degree students, personnel and alumni. All members of a team are required to be students, employees or alumni of Aalto University. An exchange student registered at Aalto during the first phase of the contest may also participate. In this context, alumni refers to a person who has studied for a basic or postgraduate degree or graduated from Aalto University or its founding predecessor schools. Students are allowed to receive guidance in the drafting of a design proposal. Participation in the contest is anonymous.
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation and awarding of participating works will be performed in accordance with the contest’s rules and principles as well as with high professional standards.
The work should express Aalto University’s objectives, which are multidisciplinary, pioneering, communal, international and responsible by nature. Designs should be visually and artistically distinct. Representations of modern, multifaceted visual thinking are expected.
The goal is to award those contest submissions that have potential for further development into a donor memorial.
Contest schedule
The contest will be divided into two stages. Draft designs will be submitted during the first phase. A jury will examine these drafts and possible additional material and select the works that progress into the second stage of the contest. Designs that are included in the second stage will then be evaluated on the basis of scale models and possible additional material.

The winner will be announced in February 2012. A copy of the jury’s decision will be sent to the e-mail address that participants noted on the contest registration form. The completed work will be published in November 2012.
All designs, which are accepted into the second stage, will be on display at an exhibition during 2012. Exhibition works will be presented anonymously. If a participant(s) does not wish to have his or her design included in the exhibition, they should declare their intention on the contest registration from. Contestants selected for the second stage will be notified of the exhibition’s schedule in more detail via e-mail and through the event website aalto.fi/tulevaisuudenrakentajat.

The jury will award the three best proposals after the second stage.

3rd prize €3,000
In addition to this, the jury may choose to hand out 2-3 special recognitions. The amount of the first prize is fixed, but the jury is allowed to otherwise alter the prize money allocation.
Copyright
The submitter of a proposal retains copyright to his or her design. If a proposal is submitted by a team, the submission must detail who holds the copyright and who is involved in an assistant capacity without claim to copyright. Unless stated otherwise in the submission, all participants in a submission will be seen as equal-share holders of copyright.
By participating in this contest, designers make a commitment to hand over the copyright privileges associated with their design proposals to Aalto University up to 31 December 2012 for exhibition, communications and marketing use, inclusive of the right to pass the work on for said purposes.
Aalto University and the designer(s) of the winning proposal will negotiate a separate agreement regarding the ownership of and intellectual rights to the work, its follow-up development and the compensation paid thereof.
The purchase of other prize-winning works or recipients of special recognitions will be negotiated separately when necessary by 30 June 2012. If the contest organiser does not conclude an agreement with the designer by 30 June 2012, full ownership rights will return to the submitter of the proposal.
Contest jury
The contest’s jury consists of Aalto University representatives and art and design experts. The jury will be chaired by Executive Dean Helena Hyvönen.

President Tuula Teeri will not participate in the jury evaluating the proposals at the first stage.
Members of the jury must recuse themselves from evaluating works designed by themselves or the organisation they represent, nor may they offer guidance to other designers or themselves submit proposals for the contest. The contest secretary is Development Manager Anna-Maija Aalto of Aalto University.
How to submit proposals
A design submitted for the first stage of the contest will be
- a printout or other draft attached to an A2 size foam board and possibly
- scale model (scale must be detailed) attached to an A2 size foam board and/or
- animated/electronic version in the Quicktime movie or Flash document formats, any other formats are not accepted. The maximum duration of electronic recordings is 15 seconds and the maximum file size is 20 megabytes.
The contest entryfor the first stage must also include
- written explanation in Finnish, Swedish or English glued to separate A2 size foam board.
- attached to the back of the foam board with the written explanation, a sealed envelope marked with the name of the proposed design. The same name must be marked on the upper left corner on the opposite side of the foam board(s); the placing of the name can be chosen freely in electronic submissions, but it must be clearly visible. A contest registration form (first stage registration form) filled by the designer(s) must be enclosed in the envelope; download a copy of the form from aalto.fi/tulevaisuudenrakentajat.
First stage contest entries must be delivered packaged by 3 pm on 31 Oct 2011.

Return of contest entries
First-stage entries can be picked up after 28 February 2012 from the Aalto University Registry Office, address Otakaari 1F. First-stage entries must be picked up by no later than 31 May 2012. You can also e-mail a request to have your contest entry sent to you at your own cost. Contact us through tulevaisuudenrakentajat [at] aalto [dot] fi by no later than 31 May 2012 to request return of your entry. Mention the name of your submission. Uncollected works will be destroyed by 15 June 2012.
If a contestant who is selected into the second stage does not want to participate in the exhibition of second-stage design proposals, the contestant can pick up his or her design from the Aalto University Registry Office, address Otakaari 1F, after 28 February 2012. We will notify designers of works selected for the exhibition of the earliest date on which their works can be picked up through e-mail as well as he website aalto.fi/tulevaisuudenrakentajat.
All second stage works must be collected from the Aalto University Registry Office, address Otakaari 1F, by no later than 31 December 2012. You can ask to have the work sent to you at your own cost. Contact us through e-mail tulevaisuudenrakentajat [at] aalto [dot] fi by no later than 31 December 2012. Requests must mention the name of the proposal. Uncollected works will be destroyed by 7 January 2013.
