Aalto University visual identity

Visual Identity

A visual identity competition was arranged for students, staff and alumni of Aalto University in March-April 2009. The winner was graphic designer Rasmus Snabb, an alumnus of Aalto University School of Art and Design.

The basic version of the university’s symbol is A?. This poses a question and the challenge of involvement: ‘What is Aalto University?’, ‘What would I like Aalto University to be?’. The goal was a sign with minimally predetermined symbolism of identity. The meaning and symbolic value of the sign will grow with the new university. This is also symbolised in the universal visual cornerstones of primary colours and a basic letter.

The symbol has no single static form, and may appear in several variations by combining the A with various punctuation marks. Besides the basic version, uses have already been found for A! and A". The various punctuation marks change the meaning of A. This illustrates the point that Aalto University is not predetermined, but is open to debate, to questioning, and to examination from various points of view.
