“My first degree was in the health care sector. From experience, I can say that in those jobs many technical devices are used and the interface has been designed by someone who has no practical experience in medicine. When the interface of a device designed to be used by care staff only uses engineering language it is very easy for a situation to arise where many nurses do not utilise the machine’s capabilities to the full. If the common skills base between these sectors was broader, it could give rise to more intuitive user interfaces and completely new innovations too. In order for this to happen, it would be important to include technical training within the field of health care. Not the other way around.”
