Archive and registry
Aalto University’s Archive and Registry Services are located on the Otaniemi and Arabia campuses.
Aalto University’s registry service is responsible for registering official correspondence and decision-making documentation and for providing information. The University’s archive service is responsible for the proper storage of records and for information services related to records under permanent retention. Additionally, Archive and Registry Services is responsible for management of the University’s information administration.
Otaniemi Campus Archives
The Aalto University Otaniemi Campus Archives include the archives of Aalto University, the Helsinki University of Technology and its predecessors, as well as the Helsinki School of Economics and its predecessors.
Aalto University Archive
Aalto University was established in 2010 when the Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki merged. As the University is quite young, the volume of archived materials is quite small.
Helsinki University of Technology Archive
The archive includes materials from the Helsinki University of Technology and its predecessors:
- Technical School of Helsinki (1849–1872)
- Polytechnic School (1872–1879)
- Polytechnic Institute (1879–1908)
- Technical University of Finland (1908–1942)
- Helsinki University of Technology (1942–2009)
Helsinki School of Economics Archive
This archive contains materials from the Helsinki School of Economics and its predecessors:
- Helsinki Business College, Helsinki Business College Ltd., Korkeamman kauppaopetuksen kannatusosakeyhtiö, Kauppakorkeakoulun kannatusosakeyhtiö (1897–1973)
- School of Economics (1911–1974)
- Helsinki School of Economics (1974–2009).
Annual reports, for the years 1950 through 1990, for the Helsinki School of Economics can be viewed in digital format on the Aalto University's Töölö campus library website (in Finnish).
Arabia Campus Archives
The Aalto University Arabia Campus Archives include materials and images from the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and its predecessors:
- Craft School (1871–1885)
- Central School of Industrial Arts (1886–1949)
- Institute of Industrial Arts (1949–1973)
- University of Industrial Arts Helsinki (1973–1993)
- University of Art and Design Helsinki (1993–2009)
In addition to publication materials from the school and its predecessors, the archive contains documents of cultural and historical importance from the design and architectural fields dating back to the 1860s.
Highlights of archived material include the following collections:
- drawing (1906–1969)
- photography (1980–)
- competition works in fashion and clothing design (1980–1996)
- student works in photography (1970–1990), and
- student works in ceramics and art glass (1902–1963).
The archives from the Design Forum Finland, the Finnish Association of Designers, and other associations and private organisations are also included in the Arabia Campus archives.

The image materials from the activities of the Aalto University schools, and their predecessors, are being converted into digital format and stored in the Raami database.

Theses and dissertations from the Aalto University Schools, and their predecessors, can be viewed at Aalto University’s libraries.
Use of archived materials
Aalto University’s archives serve researchers, authorities, the media, Aalto’s students and staff, as well as private persons. The materials can be viewed in the archives research rooms on the Otaniemi and Arabia campuses at an in advance agreed upon time. To book a research room, send a request to archives at arkisto [at] aalto [dot] fi. The staff will assist you in finding and using materials and you may be able to make copies or digital versions of a document or image in accordance with an agreement between the archives and copyright holder.
