Professor of Practice in Aalto Ventures Program

The fixed-term position for five years is filled as soon as a suitable candidate has been found.

The Aalto University Professor of Practice positions provide respected professionals with an opportunity to develop further existing practices and open new areas of teaching, professional and industrial collaboration and research at Aalto University. This particular position, at the Aalto University School of Science, is located at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management and it contributes to the Aalto University-wide Ventures Program.

Job description:

The purpose of the Professor of Practice of the Aalto Ventures Program (AVP) is to elevate and develop the program to provide entrepreneurship education for students across the departments of Aalto University in collaboration with entrepreneurs. This position provides an opportunity for a dynamic development of Aalto University’s activities with the entrepreneurial ecosystem, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in the area.

The holder of a Professor of Practice position at Aalto University is expected to develop and provide education based on expertise in professional practice and scientific research the area. The Professor of Practice system of Aalto University provides respected professionals the possibility to develop education and professional work, and open up new areas of research.

Initially developed in collaboration with Stanford Technology Ventures Program, the AVP provides the students of Aalto University with inspiration, capabilities, and networks necessary to build up new businesses, and an opportunity to combine entrepreneurial mindset, innovations and management skills to experiment with entrepreneurial activities. The program enables students to learn about entrepreneurship by conducting business development projects in practice. The program provides future experts, managers and entrepreneurs with tools to frame real-life problems and design new business models for innovative new business ventures.

The holder of the professorship should develop entrepreneurship education in the program to enable Aalto University’s students to learn entrepreneurial mindset and skills by conducting professional and entrepreneurial activities in practice. The professor is expected to contribute to the further development of the program to improve our students’ learning experience and the international standing of Aalto University’s entrepreneurship education. This includes facilitating a fruitful combination of practice-based experience and research-based insights for the development of teaching of entrepreneurship in the program, and establishing and maintaining proactive collaboration with the community of entrepreneurs. In addition, we expect a capability and willingness to teach one or more courses in the program. Other important tasks of the position include ambitious collaboration with domestic and international partners to instill entrepreneurial spirit to Aalto University’s teaching, research and practice.

Requirements:

Significant international expertise in teaching and professional practice is required for the Professor of Practice position. Experience in research is considered an additional merit. Furthermore, the position requires a deep commitment to develop the field through teaching, research and societal interaction.

For this professorship the applicant is expected to have:

  • In-depth competence and hands-on experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, entrepreneurship, practices and theory of university pedagogy
  • Seniority of entrepreneurship experience and relevant broad professional knowledge and experience
  • Strong leadership skills, linked to an ability to teach teamwork and leadership
  • Good/excellent communication and marketing skills
  • Well-developed ability to teach and engage students
  • International networks within the field of professorship
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • A doctoral degree in a relevant field is considered a merit (applicants holding a master’s degree can be considered for the position. If an applicant holding a master’s degree is chosen, the title of the position will be Executive in Residence)
  • The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas: teaching, professional practice merits, interdisciplinary skills and experience, leadership in academic community and research.

Salary

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requests.
