Tenure Track Position in Biopolymer Chemistry and Engineering


The successful candidate is expected to build an excellent research and education program in biopolymer chemistry and engineering. Research and teaching should focus on new ways of valorizing biopolymers of different origin with a focus on wood-based materials. In line with Aalto University’s core thinking, research and education activities shall be conducted with an emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach.


The successful candidate will teach graduate and postgraduate courses according to the needs of the School. The applicant should be able to demonstrate their ability to undertake innovative research of a high international standard as well as excellence in teaching. In addition, the successful candidate has a strong network in the field of biopolymers and textile chemistry as well as engineering and takes an active role in the Department, School and University.


We are seeking an expert who can contribute to both our understanding of polymer dissolution and their solution behavior, as well as structure formation. The highly competitive material research should focus on the development of new products with a special emphasis on a fundamental understanding of the physicochemical properties of biopolymers in solution and suspension states, taking into account the principles of Green Chemistry. In addition, the candidate will bring significant new expertise to the department, in particular in the development of state-of-the-art characterization techniques and new bioproducts. The successful candidate will attract research funding. We are seeking applicants who, ideally, are in the early stage of their career and so the call is primarily open at Assistant Professor or Associate Professor levels in the tenure track career system.


Scientific Environment

The department of Bioproducts and Biosystems (BIO2) (http://bio2.aalto.fi/en/), one of the three departments in the School of Chemical Engineering at Aalto University, has an internationally leading reputation in basic and applied research for the development of advanced materials from natural resources. It is one of the leading European research and higher education institutions in the field of sustainable chemistry and engineering based on the utilization of renewable resources. BIO2 aims to contribute to the development of novel solutions to move towards sustainable primary production and processing systems that can produce materials with fewer inputs, less environmental impact and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.


The core competencies include forest products technology, which encompasses the pretreatment and fractionation of lignocellulose biomass with a focus on the conversion of the isolated cellulose fraction into man-made cellulose fibers (MMCFs). Close collaboration with the department of Design of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture has emerged, which allows us to work on the entire value chain of textile production.


The significant national and international attention that the joint activities of the schools of Chemical Engineering and Arts, Design and Architecture has attracted led to the decision to establish a dedicated graduate field of textile research the BIO2 department. The appointment of the tenure track Professor in Biopolymer Chemistry and Engineering is part of the efforts of our Schools to establish both higher education and in-depth research in the development of sustainable textiles from biopolymer-based materials.


We are looking for applicants who have:

  • a doctoral degree in the natural sciences or engineering, with a strong emphasis on chemistry, polymer or sustainable material science
  • knowledge in biopolymer chemistry and physics, in particular in the methodology of characterizing polymers in solutions
  • relevant teaching experience
  • a strong publication record
  • experience in international collaborations and projects
  • documented experience in obtaining research funding

Applicants with an industrial background in addition to a scientific career are very welcome.

The salary is based on Aalto University’s salary system, but applicants can also provide their own requests. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The position will be located in the Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo.
