PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE AND RESEARCH FELLOW IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES FOR FACTORIES OF THE FUTURE
The Aalto Professor of Practice (PoP) system provides departments with the possibility to hire highly respected professionals for opening new areas of research, education and professional work. The position also provides possibility for re-evaluation and dynamic development of the field. The candidate will be appointed for a part-time/full-time, 5-year fixed-term position. The position will begin during the year 2018.
Research Fellow is an academic position with predominant involvement in research and to some extent in teaching. The candidate will be appointed for a part-time/full-time, 5-year fixed-term position.
Only one of the two positions will be filled based on the qualifications of the most suitable candidate.
Research field description
We seek experts in the field of factory automation, in particular, in information technologies for factories of the future. The group of Information Technologies in Industrial Automation, which is located at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation in the School of Electrical Engineering, is focusing on the information technologies and software engineering enabling the shift to future intelligent production systems that are flexible, reconfigurable and adaptive. The focus is on the development of software architectures supporting automation systems based on the Internet of Things, Cyber-Physical Systems and Artificial Intelligence.
The research and teaching in Information Technologies for Factories of the Future includes research topics such as distributed software architectures in automation (RAMI4.0, IEC 61499, OPC-UA), wired and wireless communication standards for automation, software and system engineering for automation, flexibility and re-configurability enablers: multi-agent systems, knowledge engineering, reasoning and self-configuration.
We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher who is ready to propose and implement novel ideas of organisation of production systems and in particular formulate requirements of key enabling information technologies. A successful candidate is expected to have solid understanding of the modern trends in industrial automation and its development towards intelligent factories of the future, along the lines of agendas such as Industry 4.0.
It is expected that the candidate will make a strong contribution to the development of Aalto Factory of the Future Demonstrator being developed as a part of Aalto Industrial Internet Campus in collaboration with Aalto research groups and with support of key industries.
The successful candidate, especially in the professor of practice position, is expected to develop and maintain a leading research programme, to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and to participate in department, school and/or university service and outreach activities. For both positions, a doctoral degree in electrical engineering, computer science or in a related field, and notable expertise in research and professional work are required. In addition, the applicant´s experience in an expert or management role in industry or in public sector will be taken into account in the evaluation of his/her competence. Strong research or industrial expertise is expected in one or several areas, such as flexible manufacturing, artificial intelligence, software and ICT architectures for automation, distributed systems, cyber-physical systems.
Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.
