The School of Arts, Design and Architecture (ARTS) is an institution of higher education for design, media, architecture, motion picture, art education and art. The current key areas of research are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, welfare architecture and emerging technologies as well as urban planning and design. The school produces specialists and innovators of art, design and architecture with strong artistic and technical skills. The Department of Film, Television and Scenography invites applications for:
PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE IN DOCUMENTARY FILM
The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term with the title of Professor of Practice. The position will commence in autumn 2018.
Professor of Practice in Documentary Film is a critical thinker and an active developer of the field of creative documentary film. The purpose is to educate students to become highly qualified documentary filmmakers. The emphasis in this post is on teaching. Professor of Practice in Documentary Film will be in charge of the major of documentary film and participate in developing the department. S/he is expected to participate in cross-disciplinary co-operation within Aalto University and actively develop collaboration with other national and international partners.
The selected person is also encouraged to maintain an active professional career as a documentary film director. S/he is encouraged to take periodic, uncompensated leaves of absence to pursue her/his artistic work.
Professor of Practice position is subject to external evaluation. The applicant is expected to have significant artistic qualifications and wide practical experience in the field. Experience in teaching and educational development is an advantage. In addition, the applicant is expected to have a strong and well-articulated vision regarding the field and how it should be developed.
The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas: artistic merits, teaching, co-operative skills, and activity and leadership in artistic or academic community. Research and publication activity is considered to be an asset, but it is not required.
Furthermore, a commitment to develop the field through research/artistic and professional work and teaching activities is required.

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

- Filmography (including list of festivals, distribution, awards etc., and with the most significant productions highlighted)
- Summary of teaching experience and teaching philosophy (max 2 pages)
- List of publications (with the most significant publications highlighted, max 3 pages)
- A description of your insight about the present situation and the future development of creative documentary film (max 2 pages)
All application materials must be submitted in English. Aalto University does not accept any letters of recommendations during the application process.
From amongst the applicants in the first phase, Aalto University will select those who will be asked to supplement their application materials with e.g. a teaching portfolio, and to visit the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Supplemented applications are submitted for review by external experts (the second phase of the application process).

Professor of Practice position
Aalto Professor of Practice system is intended especially for the fields of art, design and architecture, and is applied to other fields as well. The Professor of Practice position provides departments with the possibility to hire highly respected professionals for opening new areas of teaching and research/ artistic and professional work. The position also provides possibility for re-evaluation and dynamic development of a field. In general, Professors of Practice are expected to exercise and guide research and/or artistic activity, to provide education based on it, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field.
ELO Film School Finland / Department of Film, Television and Scenography
The position is located at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography (ELO Film School Finland). ELO consists of two degree programmes. The Degree Programme in Film and Television provides teaching in seven areas of specialization: directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, sound design, and documentary filmmaking. The Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television offers three areas of specialization: production design, scenography and costume design. In addition, the Department provides teaching in history of film and courses in research skills. The Department endorses practice-based research with questions emerging from experiences in artistic and production work. The research activities aim at producing new theoretical and practical knowledge, insights and approaches on filmmaking and scenography. The Department collaborates closely with the University of the Arts Helsinki and with other national and international higher education institutions specialized in arts.
