Tenure Track or Tenured Professor in Urban Design Practices

The field of Urban Design combines artistic, scientific and technical expertise. It is internationally well-recognized discipline; however, its scope is continuously changing, diversifying and increasing. The urban design practices in Finland are contributing to the societal success and responding to the challenges of the increasing diversity and rapid urbanization.

Due to the multidisciplinary character of Aalto University, the field of Urban Design Practices is expected to combine and promote specific education and multidisciplinary interactions with disciplines contributing to urbanism, e.g. engineering, business, humanities and social sciences.

Job description

The position is to be filled at Assistant or Associate Professor level of the Aalto University tenure track system. The position is full-time and depending on the positioning on the tenure track, either on fixed or permanent term. The focus of the professorship is on creating new knowledge and developing tools and methods for the urban design practices. The societal impact and cooperation with cities and different urban areas is an important part of the position.

The tasks of the Professor of Urban Design Practices include teaching and research in the field as well as development and administrative work within the department. At the moment, the BA level courses are taught in Finnish and MA level studies mostly in English.

The professor will work in cooperation with the professors and other teaching staff of the department, with other schools in the Aalto University and related disciplines in the University of Helsinki. The professor will participate in the joint activities and development of the Urban Studies and Planning Master’s programme with the University of Helsinki.

Developing and participating actively the international cooperation and networks is necessary part of professor’s activities.


Master’s Degree in Architecture or equivalent field is a prerequisite. Doctoral Degree is valued. Applicants are expected to possess appropriate practical planning/design competence and artistic and/or research merits. In addition, the candidates are evaluated based on their teaching merits, academic leadership skills and other relevant activities in academic and professional communities. The successful candidate is expected to be internationally networked and fluent in English.

Experience of multidisciplinary collaboration and management of contemporary city planning processes are considered as an advantage, as well as knowledge about the opportunities and challenges of the Northern cultural, urban and environmental context.


Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also propose their own salary requirements.

  • a complete list of publications and other past research activities and 5 most significant publications in pdf-form
