Professor of Practice in Health and Wellbeing Architecture
The research field of Health and Wellbeing is one of the key areas in the strategy of Aalto University. It is also one of the top projects of the current government of Finland due to the aging population and the social and healthcare service reforms. Digitalization enables innovative concepts for new service systems in urban and rural areas. A research team for social and health care service environments, “Sotera”, has been operating at the Department of Architecture since the 1980s.
The professor position is full-time and filled for a three-year period, starting in spring 2018 or as agreed. Professionals recruited to Professor of Practice positions are highly respected professionals in the fields important to Aalto University. Prominent in the duties of this professorship is the running and developing research projects.
The professor will focus on research into health and social care architecture and the problems of the service systems for the aging society. The new professor will take part in developing the Sotera research team and organizing research projects at the Department.
The tasks of the Professor also include teaching an annual studio course at the MA level as well as overseeing development and administrative work within the department. The MA studies are taught in English. The professor will work in cooperation with the professors and other teaching staff of the department as well as with other Aalto University schools and various operators within the field. Developing and participating actively in international collaborations and networks is a necessary part of professor’s activities.
Professor of Practice is a professorial position meeting Aalto University requirements and subject to external evaluation. Significant expertise in research and development and/or artistic work is required in order to fill a Professor of Practice position. A commitment to develop the field through research and/or artistic work and teaching activities is also necessary.
The successful candidate is expected to be internationally networked and fluent in English. The research projects in Sotera have been run mainly in collaboration with Finnish municipalities and organizations, Finnish skills are an asset. The applicant must have a Master’s Degree in Architecture. A doctor’s degree and experience in research management are also valued. Applicants are expected to possess the appropriate practical planning/design competence and/or research merits. Knowledge about health care architecture, health and social care facilities, elderly housing and service systems are also valued. Experience in multidisciplinary collaboration and the management of research processes are considered as an advantage.
Salary and working time
Aalto University follows the salary system of the Finnish universities and provides health care and retirement benefits for its employees. Teaching personnel belong to the total working hours system, working 1624 hours annually.
