Tenured or Tenure-Track Professor in Entrepreneurial Leadership

The vacancy at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management is open to outstanding individuals with strong research and teaching interest. Ideal applicants enjoy intellectual leadership and strive for academic excellence and inspiring people around them. The call is open on all levels of the tenure track system: Assistant, Associate and Full Professor. While we especially welcome applications from early-career applicants, all outstanding candidates will be considered.

The tenure-track position in Entrepreneurial Leadership covers research areas in the intersection of leadership research and technology entrepreneurship research. Because entrepreneurship is considered one of the strongest forces shaping the societies of the 21st century, our mission is to promote entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial thinking for the success of companies in technology-intensive arenas as well as public organizations and society at large. As entrepreneurial leaders play an important role in all organizations and at all stages of innovations, we expect that improving the current understanding of leadership in the context of ventures and technology business contributes to management theories and addresses relevant societal problems. The professorship can thus complement business and management research and education in technology-intensive contexts by focusing on entrepreneurial leadership in the early stages of nascent enterprises as well as in established technology-based businesses. Topics can include but are not limited to

  • the intersection of leadership and entrepreneurship,
  • leadership issues in technology entrepreneurship and corporate entrepreneurship,
  • digital technologies and entrepreneurial leadership,
  • leadership in emerging organizations pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities,
  • entrepreneurial leadership style and culture in technology-intensive arenas,
  • the role of leaders in startup businesses as well as in large corporations,
  • values and practices related to leading entrepreneurial people that want to make a difference through their work, and
  • leading people and professional teams in the creation and development of new technology-based businesses.

Research and teaching in the area amplifies the current knowledge of leading people entrepreneurially in professional teams, startup firms and established organizations by incorporating multiple levels of analysis.

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management

The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management (DIEM) conducts world-class research and education focusing on the creation and transformation of technology-based business The department is one of Europe’s leading university departments in the fields of strategic and operations management. In total there are more than 120 persons working in the department, including 20 professors, over 30 senior and postdoc researchers, and a large number of doctoral students. The department’s main degree programs are Bachelor’s Program in Science and Technology, Master’s Program in Industrial Engineering and Management, and Aalto Doctoral Program in Science. Annually ca. 50 B.Sc., 55 M.Sc., and 10-15 D.Sc. degrees are granted. In addition, the department provides education at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels for students of other departments of Aalto University.

The department’s areas of focus include strategy and venturing, operations and service management and entrepreneurial leadership. Our research and education focuses on improving the understanding of the factors that influence firm strategies in competitive markets. These factors include the dynamic interaction between firms and their stakeholders, firms’ capability development and related decision-making practices, and the entrepreneurial processes through which firms create new offerings and revitalize their existing products and services. In addition, our research aims at increasing the current understanding of the management and development of operations in a world of advanced industrial and service systems, which are characterized by increased information intensity, network forms of organizations, and the need for lifecycle management of assets.

Our focus of research and education in technology-based business takes in multiple perspectives on leadership in technology contexts, from entrepreneurship in self-managed businesses to corporate entrepreneurship. Our research and teaching activity involves elements of learning by doing, concentrating on the factors that affect sustainable growth and renewal of business in technology-intensive environments. With the department’s particular emphasis on entrepreneurship in engineering and innovation contexts, the area of interest in the new entrepreneurial leadership professorship includes entrepreneurial actions in startup business and intrapreneurship, leading creative people and professional teams, self-leadership, as well as the psychological and economic factors underpinning entrepreneurial thinking in technology-intensive contexts. The applicants are expected to conduct state-of-the-art research in the area and develop new research programs with international visibility. The teaching load in these positions is negotiable but is planned to include two courses per year. In addition, the tasks are planned to include participation in Master’s and doctoral thesis supervision as well as contributing to the department’s research, teaching, and outreach activities.

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research, teaching, academic leadership experience and the activity in the scientific community. The evaluation of applicants will be supported by bibliometric analyses using e.g. ISI Web of Science.

The salary is competitive at the European level and initial research funding will also be provided. The starting date for the positions is negotiable.
