The position targets primarily candidates for the Assistant Professor level. However, candidates with an outstanding record for Associate or Full Professor levels are welcome to apply and will be considered.

Job description

The position is situated in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, see http://mecheng.aalto.fi/en/. The department conducts research in engineering related to mechanics and energy technology. The research in mechanics is organised under the following thematic research groups: Engineering Design, Engineering Materials, Production Engineering, Marine Technology, Solid Mechanics. Currently, the department has 30 professors together with lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff. In total, the number of personnel is about 250. The research is supported by exemplary research facilities including state-of-the-art microstructural characterization of materials. Mechanical characterization is digitalized using full-field displacement measurements and modelling.

The open position is intended to strengthen the research and education in Engineering Materials, by renewing activities on advanced steels and their applications. Both fundamental and applied industry-related studies should be emphasized, with attention to modelling, to mechanical and physical properties, to processing, and to practical applications. Topical ongoing research of the group focuses on new materials and processes, and on applications in energy, transport and process industries. Residual stress measurements, metrology, evaluation of hydrogen embrittlement, corrosion, and assessment of NDT reliability are also topics of ongoing research, as is the weldability of modern high-strength steels and stainless steels, including modelling analysis.


Those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research, teaching and academic leadership and activity in scientific community. The evaluation of applicants will be supported by bibliometric analyses using e.g. ISI Web of Science.

Applicants in all subfields of engineering science of materials with focus on steels are invited to apply. Experience in leading a research group, and success in competitive research funding will be considered as an advantage.


Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.
